if I have to short dick every cannibal in the Congo!"
I have no idea what that means, but it cracks me up every time I watch that movie. |

The first half of the film was great.
The Vietnam part, not so much. |

During a recent project, there was an Italian programmer who loved FMJ. He could recite almost the entire movie from memory but didn't understand the nuances of what most of the lines meant.
"Shitting tiffany cuff-links" was difficult to explain to someone whose first language isn't English. |

"Directive from HQ: 'Sweep and clear' not 'Search and Destroy'" Plenty of good quotes and deep social/military/war commentary in the second part. R. Lee Ermey just stole the film, that's all. |

The first half was very good. But I thought the second half was done just as well.

One of my top 5 movies of all time. "Holy Jesus....what is this....What the fuck is this? A jelly donut???"

I just bought the movie last night at Walmart & have it playing in my reloading room.

View Quote Here's what I think it means: He's going to motivate Pyle to work hard, and lose all his excess weight. This will piss off (ie, short dick) cannibals (in the Congo), who would have liked to feast on him. ETA since we're apparently reciting lines: "I wanna stick my tube steak into your sister." |

I caught the last half of this movie last night, and noticed something I want to ask about: The second squad leader (the guy who takes command after the LT gets hit) seems to be carrying a lever action rifle on his pack... what in the world is up with that? this guy, this gun... http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/b/b7/FMJ-2.jpg/601px-FMJ-2.jpg View Quote Is that the one that carried a BB gun? |

You can see him wave it to the camera during the "Is that you, John Wayne??" Attack scene. |

I'm sure its common knowledge but if not, R. Lee Ermy was a technical adviser on the set, and the producer liked him so much, they hired him to play the part of Gunny. All of his lines were ad libbed.
"I bet you're the kind of guy that would fuck a person in the ass and not even have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach-around. I'll be watching you." |

View Quote "Short dick" in that context means to "frighten" - enough so that the cannibal's penis retracts into the body. In other words - I'm going to raise so much hell with you that cannibals in the Congo are frightened. A line from the Gunny who ad libbed many of his lines in the movie. |

View Quote When Ermey ad-libbed the 'reach-around' line, Stanley Kubrick stopped filming and asked, quite innocently, what a 'reach-around' was. Ermey explained what it entailed, and Kubrick was apparently amazed that 'people DID that'. He then kept the line in the film. |

He also did a lot of the running scenes with a bunch of broken ribs, courtesy of a Jeep accident. A tough motherfucker...
His audition tape featured him howling verbal abuse at an imagined line of recruits for a solid fifteen minutes as oranges and tennis balls are thrown at him. He never broke character or repeated himself. |

Loved the movie, mainly because I'm a huge fan of the book that it's (mostly) based on. So many of the scenes, after the boot camp portion, are almost word for word.

Maybe they had more than one influence, I dunno. For me, watching the movie for the first time, especially when they got to Vietnam, was like reading Herr's book all over again. I caught myself finishing many of the lines before the actors did. |

**My favorite line in the movie below in bold**
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Did your parents have any children that lived? Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, yes, sir. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: I bet they regret that. You're so ugly you could be a modern art masterpiece! What's your name fat body? |

I am the same mid 60s vintage as FMJ and when I watched it I couldn't believe how much they nailed my boot camp experience until I later learned that the Gunny was the real deal. I didn't see any of the homo references, but the rest was accurate. We heard that a recruit in another series had killed himself at the rifle range because he couldn't qual. I didn't see any DI hit a recruit, they would PT every "swinging dick" until collapse in the sand pit. I saw a lot of funny shit happen to other recruits as they worked to weed out(approx. 6 recruits out of approx. 77) those who should have not been there in the first place, but, doom on you if you laughed.
