Great round.  My favorite in a lever action.  One of my favorite guns is my Winchester 1886 Deluxe:

At minimum start collecting scrap lead and of course keep your brass.

Even jacketed bullets on the ground. Cut a slot if they are encapsulated in a copper jacket and they will melt in a Lee pot.

The copper jacket will float to the top.

Of course bullet lead is dirty so you might want to process it first to make clean ingots, your Lee pot will thank you and drip less.

If you make a bullet trap before shooting you can collect your lead bullets in the dirt and recast them.

Tedious but really helps during ammunition droughts like we’re experiencing now.

The best part is being able to shoot exactly what you want as far as power levels go. The 45/70 covers a very wide stretch of energy.

Absolutely! Mild to wild!

I don’t shoot wild sitting or prone....the only cartridge I shot where I saw stars...

It was beautiful!

The Marlins will withstand loads you probably don't want to shoot-and keep in mind that "light" loads killed a lot of buffalo. I load all my stuff to the upper end of trapdoor pressures. Iowa whitetail die easier than buffalo do.

I agree.  I just don't get all of the cartridges in slings and on stocks.

There's the obvious issue of potentially losing or damaging cartridges, but it also makes the rifle in hand needlessly heavier.  It's a dang .45-70.  How many rounds do you need to get the job done?    Most have tubes that hold at least 4, if not more, plus one in the chamber.  Mine is 6+1.  And if I want to carry more, a spare box in a pocket/vest/pouch carries better, at least for me.

Seems like an Instagram thing.

I use mine to store rounds getting in and out of vehicles during hunting season since we can't have loaded rifles in a vehicle here in CO. Got sick of having loose rounds bouncing around in my cup holders. If I could leave the gun loaded, I probably wouldn't bother.

I shot one owned by @buck19delta. Was expecting a worm hole to open up upon squeezing the trigger. Big pile of meh. I mean, it’s fuckin sweet but I was expecting.....more.

I also have a 375 H&H that I’ve fired some stout safari loads through so there’s that. Maybe it was because of the load? The Hornady flex tip rounds or whatever they’re called.

those were weak assed factory loads.  handloading gets the round up to shoulder dislocating power levels, id say a heavy handload is around 3x recoil what a factory load is.  IIRC a ruger # 1 in 45/70 will produce up to 7000lbs of muzzle energy with heavy handloads. you put that ruger # 1 load in a marlin lever gun and it will blow the gun apart. no different than taking a heavy loaded ruger revolver and trying to shoot that same load in a airweight snub nose .357.

you make yourself a heavy hand reload and the marlin 45/70 is a whole new animal than the one you saw with weak assed factory loads designed to be safe in the weakest 45/70 ever produced. . i remember reading about a guy shooting a cape buffalo in the chest with a 45/70 and finding the bullet basically in its ass after traveling thru 6 feet of buffalo.

basically this.

“45-70” can be considered 3 separate cartridges:

This 45-70:

- is an original Springfield “trap door” and should only be loaded with cast lead bullets and either black powder (or if you really know what you are doing) a reduced substitute load.  It goes without saying it should first be checked by a gunsmith; most owners don’t shoot their trapdoors anymore.  Rolling blocks are slightly stronger - but probably not many left in shootable condition.

This 45-70, a stainless steel Marlin,  is designed for most modern factory  loads, including jacketed bullets:

But if you hand-load carefully, and decide you need to abuse your shoulder, beat up your brass, create elephant killing loads, then the gun to handle it is this:

Ruger light artillery (aka Ruger no. 1 single shot).

I have had good results with pistol powders, wads, and cereal fillers; but it's a little more advanced technique wise. A "dented can" type store can be a very cheap source for cornmeal, grits, and cream of wheat that isn't fit for consumption.
I won't say how it's done, but I have done well in the past with WC860, duplex loaded with pistol powder as well.
