So it begins
Facebook's parent company Meta is slashing hiring plans as Mark Zuckerberg warns of "one of the worst downturns in recent history". The social media giant plans to hire as much as 40pc fewer engineers than it had earlier predicted, amid an economic downturn and as privacy changes hit its advertising business. Mr Zuckerberg, Meta's chief executive, outlined the changes to staff on Thursday. "If I had to bet, I'd say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we've seen in recent history," he told employees, according to a recording of the event leaked to Reuters. He said that Meta would hire between 6,000 and 7,000 engineers, compared to previous plans for around 10,000. Mr Zuckerberg's comments echo those of fellow tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is in the process of cutting 3,500 salaried jobs because of a "super bad feeling" about the economy. Mr Zuckerberg said many staff who leave will not be replaced and bosses will be encouraged to identify employees not pulling their weight. "Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn't be here," he said. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2022/07/01/mark-zuckerberg-tells-meta-execs-find-staff-who-shouldnt/ |

Stolen elections have consequences and his zuck bucks paid for the steal. Fuck the Zuck |

I applied for a bunch of Meta jobs a year or so ago. None of the job req's really made sense and I never got one callback on dozens of positions lol.
I still don't know WTF meta actually is. I doubt most other people don't either. |

Canary in the coal mine?
I bet that web based advertising has to be among the first things cut when the economy is on the decline. They probably see and feel it first. Not a good sign for the economy, but entirely predicable. When most people need a payday loan to pay for groceries and gas, you probably don’t need much more of a sign. |

So I guess white supremacists really are the biggest danger to this country.

I know that it would be a stretch, but I hope they go out of business

View Quote Return on investment from Facebook advertising is horrible. Independent verification in almost non-existent, and Facebook supplied metrics have been proven false on multiple occasions. Insta was somewhat better, but I haven't worked on anything on that end for a while. But, do you know what you call advertising that doesn't actually generate more sales? Branding. |

The bizarre issue going on in the background of this story is the fact that Meta is building this huge complex in the middle of the high desert south of Boise about 10 miles.
Boise has a large microchip plant, Micron, that employs many people, but outside of Micron, not sure where Dumb Dumb plans on finding people to staff this huge facility? The best part is, the fucking place is surrounded by gun ranges and public land where tons of people go to shoot. I'm sure they won't be able to hear gun fire from inside, but definitely from the outside. Besides, these scumbags knew what was coming. This is no surprise. |

Data accumulation and sales. The problem is there's no more data to collect. Maybe Zuc finally outdrove his headlights and has a "if we build it they will come" type approach that isn't panning out. At the time I just needed a job and thought it would be interesting, even if for a short while to try a stint at one of the silicon valley big boys. |

We all make fun of FB/Meta, but the joke is on a lot of us: you own a ton of Meta stock via the S&P500…so you’d better hope they do well.
Or build your own portfolio without things like Meta. |

Tech sector on NASDAQ has been taking it on the chin since this downturn started.

Bet they get rid of the people who put in 9-10 hour productive working days instead of the folks who spend all of their time participating in special D&E groups.

I mean, he's a notorious asshole. He's such an asshole that they even made a movie about him being an asshole. If you go work there, realize that you're working for an asshole.

Quoted: Silicon Valley companies will actively work at finding new jobs for H1-B holders while they kick the American workers out the door. I'll often get calls from recruiters looking to place them at new jobs. View Quote Unfortunately this is quite true. Between the woke HR types that consider it a personal failure to hire a white, straight man and the Indian tech clique that only hire their cousin's friends, I don't want to think about how hard it will be to find a new job when it really hits the fan. |

Apple has really hurt Meta with changes iOS/iPadOS allowing users to shut off cross app tracking, etc. google says they plan to do the same in future android releases. I’m sure google is delaying till they can figure out how not to damage their own business and data collection opportunities.
|
|
So they're going to get rid of all those h1bs first right and definitely not hire any more?

I have a hunch which departments have some fat to trim.
If there is a silver lining to what’s coming, it’s that a lot of people will find out if they contribute to the core business / profitability. |
