Whatever you do, don't take I-10. That's got to be the worst highway in the US.

There's nothing much to see or do on I-20. I live in Vicksburg.
The delta is nothing but miles of flat land as far as you can see. |

One thing I noticed was a loooooong construction backup heading south between Little Rock and Texarkana. Dead stop for at least 10 miles. This was Friday evening. I would hate to get stuck in that if they are re-surfacing over the weekend or something. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

It's down to one lane, backing traffic up to benton. |

Be sure and stop at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, LA, for a big plate of Cajun cooking. They are about fifteen miles west of Baton Rouge, but it feels like you're out in the middle of the bayou....... Because you are. |

I travel that area all the time. Thru Arkansas is the better route. Cross the Mississippi River at Greenville, and take 82 the back way into Texarkana. I still do not know what I saw, because I've never seen anything like that. But the ground was moving around the dumpster when I stopped there one evening. I figure it was a carpet of bugs or something, but I was not about to investigate. The tigers they had there were pretty cool, though and the food certainly was good. |

I've driven between Hot Springs and DFW about every conceivable way.
1 - You don't want to be coming into Dallas anywhere near rush hour 2 - I-40 between Little Rock and Memphis is horrible, and always under construction. Last year there were potholes that threatened to rip wheels off. 3 - I - 30 isn't bad between Benton, AR and Rockwall, TX, normally ... Road work or accidents can change that. 4 - the scenic route is to take Hwy 70 out of Hot Springs, over the Ouachita Moutains crossing to Texas on Hwy 37 and you'll hit Hwy 82 just east of Paris, TX. The. Take the best road to whatever part of the metro mess you have to get to. |
|
I drove 40 from Memphis to Little Rock, then 30 from Little Rock to Texarkana this week.
I've driven on better caliche roads in Texas. At higher speeds. 10 and 20 through Louisiana are both worlds better. |
|
I'm doing that reverse drive. Except into Jackson. I-20 is not scenic. Unless you are looking for casinos in Shreveport, dumps or adult stores.

View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Are you going to Jackson or the Jackson area? Jackson is a shithole. You should be armed at all times. Madison and Ridgeland are relatively nice. If you like pizza Soulshine Pizza Factory is very tasty. http://ridgeland.soulshinepizza.com/menu/ +1 I also live in Oxford. Have family in Shreveport. Make the trip all the time. Fastest route is 55 south to 220 around Jackson then 20 west to Shreveport. Six hours if you don't dawdle. Absolutely boring drive but you can make good time in MS. Much less truck traffic on 55 than 40. On a non-holiday MS Hwy Patrol is not going to blink at you going 80 and Sheriffs can't check speed. LA State Police are going to be a bit stricter and every car from every PD and Sheriff in LA is going to be checking speed. Hope you enjoyed Oxford. -J |

Too many unknowns. Where in MS to where in TX ? I leave from Gulfport tomorrow morning for Dallas. Timed run, so I-10 to 49 to 20.
The way here was much longer, only 7 miles of freeway. On the bike. |

Northern Louisiana is kind of crap.
But then so is Southern Arkansas. Shreveport is like Little Rock, except dirtier and with casinos. Sorry, LA. Watch out for State Troopers regardless of which route you choose. |
|
I'd go though LA, but only because I've never been that way. Taken the TX/AR route many times. Its nothing to write home about.

I used to go Greenwood, Greenville, Lakevillage, Texarkana, Dallas
When I was going between greenwood and Dallas. It was shorter than going do to Vicksburg then over to Dallas and less monotonous. And Oxford is only 1:30 hours north of greenwood, that will put your total trip to 8 and a half hours max I always thought the red river flood plain in Arkansas was a pretty area. |
|
I came home through Jackson and then took I-20 to home.
It was an enjoyable ride, and going over the Mississippi on the I-20 bridge was the first time I've actually been able to see the river from the road, and see the barges and traffic. It was cool. I damn near got washed out in Monroe, HUGE storm, but about halfway to Shreveport the rain stopped for good. |

I20 is a easier trip, but boring as noted. Going across on I40 to I30 is miserable. 6 hours sandwiched between trucks. There is no scenery. The interstate cuts through the flatest route possible. Rice fields, cotton fields, bean fields, hay fields and pine trees. You can have a more interesting trip by getting off the interstate, but comparing sound the little towns to the third world is about right. There are some places that are worth seeing and some some beautiful country, particularly in Arkansas, but many of the little towns have been abandoned by anyone worth a shit.
Also, if you choose to get off the interstate, every little town is a speed trap. |

The route from Memphis to Little Rock is pretty much done, but now the stuff from Little Rock to Dallas is under construction, and Texarkana is always building something. If you come back through again, you should try to find an excuse to cross as Greeneville. They built a fancy new suspension bridge a few years back that is pretty neat to see. I've got family in Greeneville and Jackson, and so I've spent my life making the Little Rock to Jackson pilgrimage. |
