My dad said "A lot of batteries do that. Not a problem. Google it."

Well I googled it and I'm pretty sure that it is not good.

What do y'all think?

I have emailed the seller on EBay, and I will contact Optima tomorrow.

I had the battery tested at Advance auto parts and the results were:" />

Yeah, put on a face shield, unhook it, and store it far away from people or buildings you care about....

Don't know wtf the numbers mean...but I would get a new battery.

Not a fan of Optima.  I've replaced probably 50+ due to premature failure (former yacht co. service manager).

When it finally lets you down replace it with Odyssey.

Yeah, sometimes batteries swell up like that.

The next step is known as "venting."

I had one blow up while driving.  Sprayed acid all over.   Was real close to pulling in my driveway.

Guy at autozone said he had never seen one do that before.

As a side note anyone buy one of the Energizer Premium AGM batteries from Sam's club?  I bought one earlier this year just wondering if it is any good.

Where did you buy it?   As a side note I scan in all my thermal receipts that are for expensive stuff because they fade over time.  Some places can look up receipts from the card you used to purchase the item with if one was used.

Your Optima isn't bulging. The rest of the battery just got cold and shrunk.

Those things are shit these days.  I went through 3 (replaced under warranty) red tops and 2 (one replaced under warranty) yellow tops.

Never again, Optima.  Never again.

This.

Get money back....buy Orbital or Odyssey blue top from a battery shop.
Your gonna spend a little more, but you will be able to have it serviced/exchanged/replaced at any battery shop in their system.

Sure beats mailing it back and forth.

Several months after my Optima battery blew up, my alternator suddenly died at the end of a long trip.

So this might be a good idea or at least have the system checked out.

Buying a battery on Ebay?   How reputable was the seller?

I've been ripped off with counterfeit batteries on Amazon before.  Brought some Lithium 9V batteries.  The packaging looked exactly like Duracell Lithium 9V batteries, but they leaked with a year when I opened the first package.  They were actually alkaline batteries made to look just like more expensive Lithium 9v batteries.

Either way- I'd get that out of your vehicle ASAP- and perhaps as another poster suggested, your alternator is overcharging the battery.

Okay, great. Still, buying a car battery off of eBay seems really silly to me. Looks like you were bit in the ass by doing it also...

Take it out, plug it in to a rapid charger to keep it warm, and give it a hearty belly rub.

Looks like you are still getting 14.9V with a load, however battery looks like it was below charge for some time and hard sulfation occurred in a section of the lead plates,  hence the bump.    Eventually you will have issues.

It is overcharging the battery, AGM batteries don't like high charging voltage, but some modern systems run that high and are pcm controlled, so changing alternators may not make a difference.

Guys Optima post 2010 IS NOT the same as Optima pre-2010 (or there abouts).  They are complete crap these days, do not buy them.  (coming from someone who races and has used a shit load of these batteries in race cars)

Replace battery immediately.
Verify  charging voltage is in range 14 to 14.7 volts

I would not recommend the "Optima" brand, there are far better batteries, and ALL of them cost less.

Optima will probably tell you to bring it back to where you purchased it. Even if you send it back they will tell you it was over charged which may or may not be true.

How is your alternator? Is it overcharging the battery?

If you overcharge them / apply too high of a voltage they will produce excess hydrogen and bulge. They will also bulge if the venting mechanism on the battery is bad.

Either way its not good for a battery to do that.

i had a bulging li-po battery and it catch fire, fuck that.

store it outside, i wouldn't take a chance.

Your alternator is overcharging. Whatever battery is either going to vent poison gas or get a sweet bulge like that.

Lol, those things have been more hype than anything else.  Why anyone would anything other than an Interstate battery is beyond me.  They last forever, I've never replaced one.  I've always either gotten rid of the vehicle or the car has died before the battery.  I think the longest was like 8 years I had one before i sold the truck and the battery was fine at that time.
