Would that have happened 20 or even 10 years ago though? There seems to be a trend not seen since the Vietnam War when Navy ships had race riots break out that made the ships combat ineffective.

This month marks the as long out as I was in. My boys are grown and on their own. The elder of my 2 declined 2 service academy appointments. Had we had the conversation, it would have been the difference between command and order and the importance of the oath of office. I like to believe they are of very good conscience and moral character.

This POS will be gone soon.  I had to deal with Nixon resigning and Ford moving into the Whitehouse in the 1970's.  I then had to put up with Bill clintoon when he was the president.  Joe will be gone soon enough and the next president has the opportunity to repair the damage.

Aircraft Maintenance culture used to have a lot of hazing to it. For better or worse that's all gone now

We used to have beers in the Production Supervisors office before going home from Swing Shift on Friday nights.

Circa 2007 in Al Udeid I was feeling this Black female Airman's breasts in front of the whole shift while waiting on the bus to take us back to the dorms.... totally consensual but these days Hell No

People were "no balled" into whipping their dicks out on the flight line trucks

I had Expeditors showing me porn on iPads while I was getting ready to service LOX on a jet

We had this one Airman who was a total homophobe on one desert trip who was fat and useless so we would all randomly start dry humping him to piss him off

Another kid turned 21 on a Sunday while we were in Guam....he didn't even make it to midnight that Saturday evening before he passed out....all of us NCOs helped him get there. Our Section Chief was furious.....that kid is now a 1stLt

All of those days are over now, but our quality of life has gotten better

Also the AF is at least trying to fix our suicide issue

Plus DADT sucked for a lot of gay/lesbian members.... let's face it when that was repealed quite a few people we knew came out and others we were like "huh, no shit"

We are starting to grow a crop of leaders that actually give a shit about their people.  "That's the way we've always done it" is beginning to become a dirty phrase.

We're finding that if we treat our people as human beings and empower them to do thier job and do what's right, we get way better results.

Not all change has been positive, but I'd much rather be a junior enlisted member today than 18 years ago when I joined

If the right surrenders their last bastion of power, the military, they have everything they need to make an attempt to consolidate power.  The left likely already owns the leadership of .mil and they are doing what they can to discourage new right wing recruits, and to root out existing undesirables.

People on the right need to go into the belly of the beasts and quietly work their way into positions of power and fight and resist from the inside.  A good patriot on the inside is worth a hundred on the outside.

I did not serve in the military.  I always told myself that when I had children, I would present military service as a realistic option after high school, as opposed to only college, as my parents did.

Now my children are entering middle school.  Sad to say, but I have to go back on that earlier conviction.  I would never encourage my own to enter the military for this country.  I won't tell them they can't, which would be silly, but I will definitely suggest every other option first.  The US is absolutely a house divided, and I'd hate the thought of them serving half a population that despises them.

I can't be the only one here that has come to a similar decision.

Is it really? The benefits have never been better, the deaths in training have never been lower, and there are currently no cohesive world powers that can start a near peer conflict in the next decade with the possible exception of China. The pervasive leftist encroachment civilians are worried about isn't really going to impact someone with enough sense to shut up and play the game for four years.

OP I say this as someone who's been in coming up on 18yrs......most of us don't necessarily serve to protect people who do or don't support us. We do it for a multitude of reasons.

19yr old me fresh out of high school enlisted to give back to the country that allowed me to have a great upbringing in a small town in central PA during a time of relative prosperity (1990s/early 2000s).

Additionally 9/11 had occured 2.5 years before when I was a sophomore in HS and I felt I needed to do my part in my generation's war.

I always knew I'd join some branch. Had I not went active AF I was looking at being a weapons troop on Air National Guard A-10s or working on UH-60 Blackhawks for the 28th ID PA National Guard

Plus I was a big airplane/gun/and history nerd as well and I figured I might as well join and learn about the .mil from the inside.

Where I'm going with all this is that even if the majority of the population is apathetic or hostile to the military it's a still a great life and a neat way to meet people, see the world, and do some pretty cool shit for a living.

Yes by all means sign up and go to some shithole that you'll risk your life to "gentrify" people who fuck goats and beat their women and wipe their hands with their asses right before they shake yours.

Do that for 20 years and then your bosses say "fuck it" and you leave, giving all your weapons and equipment to the people that would cut your fucking head off given the chance.

But hey.... the benefits, right?

4 years in a typically non combat MOS isn't going to have any of that risk exposure statistically speaking. The biggest danger in most branches amounts to industrial accidents with heavy equipment. 20 year combat guys are a statistically tiny part of the military.

The reason WE serve has not changed. The stakes however, are higher and much more convoluted. WE .as in we who have done it not considered it a fleeting fancy.

I do not disagree in the OP's mindset, I do not encourage my nephews and nieces and the hundreds of teenagers I have spoken to since my serve ended on the "why" I would not encourage service today. I, like many others, am clear and transparent on what has changed ..and what has not.

I'm chiming in on the last 2+ decades of documented military involvement and .gov policies so I'd say that's well documented and I may know about.

@Keekleberrys

I wasn't in the military and I sincerely mean it when I say thank you for joining.

I think the OP's point (and the point of my posts) is that in the current state of our .gov/administration that couldn't give 2 shits about the Constitution that you swore and oath to defend, why would anyone encourage their child to join the military?

And yes, There often is a tone of "you didn't join so fuck you" in threads like this and from some of the .mil members here.

You sign up to potentially die doing your job. You knew that could happen going into it. Does that make you more special than others?

No, it doesn't.

@Bohr_Adam
This is true, but have you ever seen a climate like the one we're in now? I've been around a little while and I've never been more afraid of the future of this country than now, ever. The vast majority of that is from our .gov incompetence and corruption of our "leaders".

Would you encourage the younger generation/ your child to serve something under the control of the current political and bureaucratic incompetence and corruption?

This is a good conversation we have going in this thread, really.
