Two large boxes from my childhood.
I live across country and didn’t have time to go get them. So I had her ship them and it’s here! Just a bunch of junk. But I did find an pristine original first edition Sony Walkman I got as a gift in 1979. Blue metal with blue leather case. Headphones long destroyed. Still works. $700 or so! An Apple IIe computer with dual disc drives. A floppy with the fuller brush man program still in one of them lmao. Only worth about $100-150 |

Better than my parents, who took all my childhood stuff and threw it in the trash instead of asking me to come get it (to give to my kids).
Lots of legos, lincoln logs, model kits, books... not trash. It's in a landfill now, many fucks be upon them. |

parents (& relatives in general) will screw you over & act like its their right to do it. somethings wrong with you for not liking it.

My mom threw away all my old stuff. I had my cheerleading uni with my poms, loads of sheet music, a shoe box full of concert tix stubs, etc. I'm not that far away from her, all she had to do as ask and I would have come to get it.
She missed my old platform shoes. I grabbed those and took them home. I found an old pic... obviously they hadn't been worn or even in daylight for years. Holy shit, how did I walk in those things? Attached File |

Original 1979 Walkman? cool. I had a walkman 10, those are now selling for big bucks too.

so I take it you had no younger sibs or worse, steps, to tear all your good shit up while screaming "they won't share, MAKE THEM SHARE!!!"
this is why we can't have nice things |
|
Meanwhile, my 41 year old stepson's boxes and boxes of stuff remain in my garage attic because "he should get to sort through it". He's in fucking Colorado. Never going to happen.

Lucky,
My mother (and step father) sold my Stingray bike, B&M super charger with low rise carb kit (new, not installed yet) and a set of aluminum mag wheels while I was in BOOT CAMP. No, I did not get any of the money. Also the full B&M set up was stored under my bed as my room was all the storage I was allowed. It was going on my car when I got home on leave. At least they didn't sell my car. |

As a parent, with a soon to be gone kid, my plan is to give him the option to clean out his room and put anything he wants to keep in storage tubs. I have no problem storing them for him until he settles down someplace. Once he is settled or we downsize into a smaller house, he will have the option of picking his stuff up or telling me to toss it.

When my first kid is out of the house in a year or two, anything he doesn't take is going. I am going to pile everything in the middle of the room. grab the carpet at all four corners, pull it up and take the whole thing to the dump like a giant Santa sack of shit.
Done! |

I had an entire running 1965 Ford F-100 on our farm that I purchased. I was going to use it for sheet metal, engine etc. to fix up our family owned 65 F-100 we were working on the farm. While at bootcamp, my parents took it to the wrecking yard. |

One on my sons still has things here, his wife won't let him bring the items into their home.
It's old HS trophies and things like that. |

I have an old friend that was storing his kids stuff in a garage behind the house.
One day when everyone was in for a family dinner he announced before everyone left if there was any of their stuff in the garage that they wanted to keep they should take it with them. They all looked around and said no, nothing there we want. He had been storing it for 30 years, LOL. |
|
I had to get rid of my 1968 Cougar Dan Gurney Special when my parents told me to get it out of their yard and I didn't have any place to put it.

The best way to not get caught in this situation is to not assume, either as the parent or the child.
Once the kid has reached the age their place of primary residence is at a location other than the parent's house, it's time for a conversation. Some parents might want to keep all the kids's stuff around for nostalgia, others think it's time for the kid to become an adult, and that means not using their house for free storage. |
|
You're lucky she contacted you instead of just getting rid of it all.
My mother/stepfather gave most of my things to their church for a rummage sale. I had four medium sized boxes, packed neatly, taped shut and labeled. When I moved out into a tiny condo with no storage I'd left them in the back corner of my old bedroom closet so they were out of the way. Never heard a complaint about anything. Went to their house one day to get my old baseball glove and it was gone. Footballs, catcher's mitt, a Willie McCovey autographed baseball bat, and many childhood toys. I had a collection of 70s Japanese die-cast spaceships, the ones that shot the missiles later banned because they were "choking hazards." All new in the box. Gone. Major Matt Mason, G.I. Joe, etc. |

Quoted: So are you saying that if you leave stuff at their house and for many years, basically abandon it, they don't have the right to toss it? Because it's sounds like some of you think your parents have to store your crap forever. That’s my issue. If you leave your shit at my house for years you’ll get notified it’s going outside to the curb. I stumbled over a box a few times too many and when I looked inside it was one of the kids belongings. They are both in their 30’s, one is almost 40. That’s long enough to decide if you want your shit. And we’re making some changes in the house for our use since we’re empty nesting. |

Do you have a point or are you humble bragging about your wealth? Whatever. Have a great day. Because it's sounds like some of you think your parents have to store your crap forever. I can't speak for everyone here, but my "forever" was about 8 years as I was in the Army on active duty, then in college. It was all neatly stored in plastic totes in the attic and out of the way, expressly because I wanted my kids to have them. I had my first kid and was fairly settled and went to get them, oh, we threw that shit away. k |
|
I spent my whole life blaming my dad for throwing shit away only to find out that it was my families maid that took a lot of my childhood stuff being she was pretty poor herself and she saw how we treated it.
Lesson learned in life to take care of things. I still have my Macross collection from the 80's, I'm happy for that.....just big can of sadness because my daughter is not into it. |

Just be careful of the lawsuit David Werking filed the suit against his parents in federal court April 2019, accusing his parents of illegally destroying a large amount of pornography that he had left behind at his parents’ house when he moved out after a brief time living with his parents following his divorce in August 2017. I should call the kids and tell them to get there junknout of here.
