New York Hot Dog Vendor Evicted for $310,000 in Overdue Rent
AP via FoxNews.Com ^ | August 08, 2009 A New York City hot dog vendor has been evicted from his prize spot outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art because he couldn't pay a whopping rent bill of nearly $54,000 a month. Snack cart owner Pasang Sherpa of Queens had a deal with the city's parks department that required him to pay almost $643,000 per year for the vending rights near the museum steps. He says he was $310,000 behind on his payments when he was evicted. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,538543,00.html |

At least he has every time I've been through there. The food at the museum sucks and it's not a real convenient neighborhood. Even the school kids getting on and off their busses gotta walk by him. |

Remember the thread about the gun store in NYC that charged $100 for a transfer and most of y'all thought they were criminals for charging that much?
This puts it into a little better perspective doesn't it. |

He may have just caught the FU virus like many small businessmen are doing today and cashing the fuck out. Said FU NY& Obama stashed proceeds someplace, hell it's a cash business if you know what I mean and will declare bankruptcy.

Assuming that corner normally netted enough to pay such rents and still turn a profit, the vendor might be able to leave NYC behind with at least 500 grand in the bank. Not a bad plan. |

Wow. New York should be so proud. Legalized extortion. you should probably read the article first. the location, and it is a good one, was auctioned off –– and this hot dog vendor "won". so he *chose* to pay to play. ar-jedi |

That's real smart of the city. Shut down a revenue stream because some guy can't sell the same number of hotdogs during a serious recession as he did when things were booming along.
|
|
I wonder what they get per square foot in rent in comparable locations with the same foot traffic in NYC.
I can't imagine the amount of cash that must run through this place on a daily basis. IF the guy is paying almost 650,000 a year to be there and was profitable there must have been a good million flowing through there in cash. I wonder if NYC throws in a business carry permit for the person who rents the place? |
|
That is like $1700 a day. I can't imagine how many dogs he would have to sell to turn a daily profit after that space rent. It is clear he couldn't sell enough.

I think I recall a hot dog running like 3 bucks at that stand the last time I was there. Thats 18000 hot dogs to make monthly rent, not factoring in drinks.
Although, to be honest I kind of liked the cafeteria food at the Met. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't bad either. |

At $3.50 per dog that's over 500 hot dogs PER DAY, just to pay the rent!

At $3.50 per dog that's over 500 hot dogs PER DAY, just to pay the rent! Assuming he's there for 10 hours a day for easy figuring, that's an AVERAGE of 50 dogs sold per hour, or a little less than one per minute for 10 solid hours. NO WAY. |
|
If its true he bid that out, then maybe he over bid and it didn't pan out like he thought it would.

$54000 a month = 180 hot dogs per day @ $10 each.
I don't know that's what he charges, that's just numbers I divided out offhand...... And that is just to cover the rent––still no "profit". Even at $5 (and I'd guess they cost more than $5 but less than $10) it'd be 360 hot dogs a day to pay the rent. Not impossible to imagine. ––––- Stunning to think about though, isn't it? You may have gone yerself to college and gotten a masters––and yet a guy named Pasang is in Central Park working a hot dog cart, and is in a higher tax bracket than you (and me!) are........ ~ |

Holy crap. Never would have guessed that a hot dog stand would make that kind of money. How long had he been there? Just wondering if he had been there for 5 years and just got behind this year, or was it loosing from the start? I work in restaurants, $650k in rent would mean with food cost, you'd have to be doing almost $1.5 million in sales to make money.

A perfect example of what is wrong with NYC.
...now if only the people fleeing NYC for points south with a more sane standard of living would stop voting for assclowns who want to turn everywhere into NYC. |

Damn, I'm surprised they haven't started charging a fee to everybody who wants to walk around on those gold plated sidewalks.

Don't forget about all the OTHER local, state and federal taxes he would have to pay on top of that.

Fuck em' damn socialists. I think we have a couple members here who have hot dog stands, or have had them. Last spring somebody was asking for advice on pricing his hot dogs, I think specifically combo meals and costs associated with condiments, and, a member or two started doing hot dog math, and it was pretty interesting looking at their costs, and other issues. It was a pretty cool discussion. |

Frankly, this seems like a winner. You bid for a highly prized spot with high traffic. You sell the shit out of your product while refusing to pay the city their cut. Make sure all your money is spread out in offshore accounts in secretive countries. By the time they figure it out, you're a millionaire and you take your money, move back home, wherever that is, or fly to the Caribbean and you live like the fucking Pharoh for all your born days. You're a millonaire and living absurdly fat, while the city is holding their dick asking "wha happun?" like Ricky Ricardo. Brilliant. Why aren't more of us doing this?

Amazing that some can't see that. He is not a "laborer" wanting the government to dictate to his employer how much his time should be worth. Every dime he made people freely give him at a rate they freely choose to pay for goods. How ANYONE can compare this issue to the minimum wage discussions shows just how clueless some are about the issue at hand. FWIW, anyone of those laborers who feel they aren't getting paid enough are free to move to NYC and buy a hot dog stand - or start their own business anywhwere, for that matter. |

Pasang Sherpa ,my guess is he gets fed tax breaks(like pays no fed tax) because he was not born here, just saying!

And not every foreign born resident is an 'illegal' either.
