My expectations for tonight's game were low, but holy hell.

The defense gave up .31 EPA/play.

The offense had another 4 turnover game, and they are up to 11 on the season.

The offense is fixable. The defense is not.

That would be a huge upgrade for 99.9% of us.

However, if you thought you were going to be a franchise QB with dreams of leading a team to a Super Bowl, it's a downgrade.

That's nice and all, but most franchise QBs never make it to the Super Bowl.

Backup QB is one of the best jobs in the league. The money is good, you don't get beat up, and you don't have the pressure.

Hopefully they can get their shit together soon because they play the Redskins next and the Skins are the Cowboys' biggest competition for the NFC East.  I guess.

I'm not sure.

Based on what's known right now, the biggest concern would be Thuney's hand.

I'm assuming Kelce and Hill can play through or quickly recover from their injuries.

CEH hasn't shown that he can do anything that Williams and McKinnon can't.

But Thuney... The O-line rebuild has been the ONE good thing about this season so far for KC. If they lose him, it's bad news.

Being a career backup has to the best job in the NFL. Low physical risk, and some of these dudes have made 10's of millions barely playing a real snap outside of garbage time. I don't fault them one tiny bit for taking that job.

I've actually found myself rooting for the Chargers lately because Cowboys-haters that try to use the "they haven't beaten anyone" excuse look more and more idiotic the better the Chargers do.

I think tonight was really the first time where announcer bias really struck me.  I like Al and Chris in general but their calling in the 2nd half was hot garbage.  The refs were very loose all game.  Things were chippy and physical all night and they weren't calling pass interference or personal fouls.  Then late in the game Al chimed in that they refs were calling "everything" and on the roughing the passer call on Allen, Chris was acting like it was a total none call.  The bias towards the Chiefs was obvious.

4 times this season a QB has thrown 3+ TDs vs blitz in a game.

1 of the 4 was by Tom Brady.

The other 3 were all by Dak Prescott.

Maybe stop blitzing him so much.

To be honest I don’t watch many chiefs games. That last three I watched was the SB, Ravens, and Bills last night.

The SB and Bills games looked very similar. The chiefs simply refused to take what the defense was giving them and kept trying for the big plays. Is this on Mahomes or Reid?

And... what are defenses giving them?

Any DC worth a damn has seen that if they have the discipline to keep two safeties high and try to get pressure only rushing four, they can keep the Chiefs offense in check. The two safeties prevent home run plays, and by only sending four rushers, you're left with five guys in coverage at the second level.

This is a double whammy for the Chiefs. They pay the bills with home run plays, and when you force them to march down the field on 10+ play drives, you're burning up more clock reducing the number of possessions.

The Chiefs are built for those home run plays. They have a cast of tiny but fast WRs. Those WRs are scary streaking down the field, but they're not effective competing against bigger defenders at the second level. The only guy they have that can play well there is Kelce, and he's getting bracketed and straight up mugged more often than not.

And to be clear, they're trying to work those short plays:

They don't have the personnel for it, and it's not working. And the run game isn't an option, either.

Also, when you force those 10+ play drives, you're creating more opportunities for mistakes and turnovers.

So... what are defenses giving them? What are they supposed to do?

All you need is a good line that can get a pass rush with only four and  good safeties, good corners and good linebackers.

  • Tom Brady now has 9 career (regular season) 5+ TD games. This ties him for 2nd all time with Peyton Manning. Drew Brees continues to lead with 11. (Roethlisberger/Marino 6, Wilson/Rodgers 5)
  • Brady was spotted icing his hand during the game yesterday and is reportedly dealing with a minor thumb injury that should be good to go for Thursday Night vs the Eagles.
  • Last week Brady became the all-time leader in regular season passing yards. This week he became the all-time leader in Net Yards (passing yards minus sack yards).
  • Week 2 Brady leads game in YPC, Week 3 Brady leads team in total rushing yards, Week 4 Brady out rushes his former team, Week 5 Bradys leads game in YPC. The all time best rushing quarterback continues his legend.
  • From Football Outsiders: "The new leader in quarterback DYAR, the quarterback with the most value by our numbers and thus theoretically the leading candidate for MVP? It's not Allen, or Herbert. Or Mahomes, or Stafford, or Prescott, or Murray. 44-year-old Tom Brady."
  • The Giants record with Dave Gettleman as GM: 16-37.
  • Goff's average completed air yards yesterday was 2.5 yards. That's tied for the 2nd lowest of the season so far trailing behind only Jared Goff in week 3 with 2.1 yards.
  • DeAndre Hopkins now has 770 career receptions, the most by any player before the age of 30. Larry Fitzgerald is the 2nd highest with 664. Hopkins will be 29 for the remainder of the season and will continue to extend his record.
  • The Bills blitzed Mahomes once on 63 drop backs last night and held the Chiefs to just a single passing play of 20+ yards.
  • The points scored in the last 8 Cowboys home games with Dak Prescott: 44, 36, 41, 37, 38, 40, 47, 44.
  • So far the Cowboys (thru 5 weeks) have outscored the 2020 Cowboys by 7 points. However their defense has surrendered 63 FEWER points than last season.
  • Ja'Marr Chase has more "deep receiving yards" through 5 games than any rookie WR in NFL history. Surpassing AJ Green (2011), Justin Jefferson (2020) and DeSean Jackson (2008).
  • Trevon Diggs already has as many interceptions thru 5 weeks as 12 entire teams had in their entire seasons (since the year 2000).
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster is expected to to IR and miss the rest of the season after injuring his shoulder vs the Broncos.
  • Since the NFL merger there have been 10 teams who have had a +100 point differential after 5 games. 6 of those teams have made it to the Super Bowl. The Bills are sitting at +108 which is 6th best all time.
  • The Bills have the highest scoring offense (34.4 ppg) and the best scoring defense (12.8 ppg).
  • That was Pat Mahomes first regular season loss by more than one possession.
  • Chiefs Safety Tyrann Mathieu, "everybody in the league wants what we have, all the success we've had. Teams are chasing that, that glory." "Every team that plays us wants to beat us, they want to beat us bad."
  • The 11 turnovers in the last 4 games are the most by Kansas City since Andy Reid took over. The 2013 team turned the ball over 8 times in 4 games but were 4-0 in that stretch because the defense produced 10 turnovers. The defense only has 2 in the last 4 currently.
  • Since the Chiefs Week 10 bye last season, Patrick Mahomes has thrown 13 INTs in 14 games.
  • Patrick Mahomes threw 5 interceptions in 2019. In 2020, he threw 6 interceptions. As of Week 5 in 2021, Patrick Mahomes has already thrown his 6th interception, which is the most that he has thrown since 2018.
  • The Bills Chiefs game set a new record for the LONGEST Sunday Night Football game ever. The previous record was 4 hours and 9 minutes set by the Seahawks and 49ers in 2013.
  • Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire hurt his left knee, RG Joe Thuney fractured his hand, TE Travis Kelce sustained a stinger and WR Tyreek Hill hurt his knee, according to Andy Reid.
  • Despite being 4-1, the Greenbay Packers STILL have a negative point differential.
  • Through 5 weeks the Miami Dolphins have the 2nd worst offense and the 3rd worse defense in the NFL.
  • Worst scoring differentials this season: Dolphins -75, Jaguars -59, Jets -54, Texans -52, Falcons -43.
  • The Lions have become the first team in NFL history to lose two games in a season vs last second 50+ yard game winning field goals. And they did it in just three weeks.
  • All-time tight end receiving yards leaders thru their first 5 NFL games. Kyle Pitts 308 (1st), Aaron Hernandez 301 (2nd).

It's not just the Bills.

In a lot of ways, this goes back to the Week 12 game against the Bucs last season. In the first half, the Chiefs absolutely scorched the Bucs D, and the score was 20-7. After half time, the Bucs came out in Cover 2, and the Chiefs offense collapsed only scoring 7 more points. The final score of that game was 27-24.

Since then, when opposing teams have had the discipline to keep two high and not blitz, the Chiefs offense has sputtered. Much of their trouble has been self-inflicted, but that's arguably part of the strategy.

The Chiefs need to find a way to beat that scheme.

Hey everyone the Chiefs have been dominating the league for two years with huge shot plays, maybe we should take those away from them...

So, is this on Mahomes for the turnovers or on Reid for not adjusting the game plan?

Mahomes has certainly earned his fair share of the blame for turnovers, but there's plenty to go around. I think Tyreek is responsible for something like two ints and a fumble. CEH has fumbled twice. Pringle has fumbled twice. I think Hardman and Kemp have both tipped passes.

I'm not sure what game plan adjustments can be made. I would think the short game should be the answer, but it's not working. I think the problem is part personnel and part execution.

Hey everyone the Chiefs have been dominating the league for two years with huge shot plays, maybe we should take those away from them...

Since the Super Bowl, it's on Reid. Mahomes still has a lot of room to grow as a quarterback, but the Chiefs issues start at the top big time.

Browns got jobbed by the refs. Horrid PI call on that last 4th down play. They are going to cost us a game.

First time?
Far from it. Browns fans are used to getting screwed by the zebras.

I'm not sure I agree with that.

In the Super Bowl, the Chiefs O-line was getting beat immediately, Mahomes was running for his life, and the offense was still gunning for the home run plays.

Here's Mahomes's passing chart from last night again:

Last night, the pass protection was okay, and only 5 of 54 attempts were targets 15+ yards down the field.

Basically, it was the opposite of the Super Bowl, and it's still not working.
