She just graduated high school last year and is in her first year of college. The recruiter told my wife that my daughter almost aced the ASFAB which they said was "unusual". So the question is, is it unusual? Or are they feeding us a line of BS? I was never in the service, but I have heard the recruiter stories of promising more than what will happen.

Her AQFT score is a 99.

BS, if she is doing well in college and having a good time then she needs to stay there IMO.

Well, they don’t show up at your front door when you score high enough to work motorpool.

High 90’s isn’t all that common for the ASVAB.

Scoring high gives you far more opportunities in the military.

However, fuck him, he’s a liar.

It's probably semi accurate.

I had no criminal record, scored in the 98th or 99th percentile with a 141 GT and they wouldn't leave me the fuck alone

Calls roughly 3-4x a week but they never came by the house.

The USN recruiters across from our recruiting office absolutely did have  gender and affirmative action quotas (or “mission”),

She’s an “alpha” on the ASVAB test (51 or higher), so she’s a desirable applicant as recruiting commands want alphas and not “bravos” (50 and below on the ASVAB).

As a father, i’d Encourage her to finish college first no matter what her plans are.

No shit! Some people think the military is the end of the world.  It was a fucking blast for me as a younger soldier in my first hitch.  No 22 years later not much of a bigger blast but still a whole lot more fun and interesting than other stuff I could be doing.

I agree with others that if she started college and is doing great she should stay in school and finish that.  We have a E5 that had two master degrees no debt because the military paid for his school but does this because being a tanker is a fun as fuck.

Actually, up until this point all of the answers have been on the same page.  STAY IN SCHOOL.  If she wants to serve she can easily joint ROTC or go OCS after graduation. however, DO NOT DROP  OUT OF UNIVERSITY TO ENLIST!

Except OP asked if almost acing the ASVAB is unusual, not if she should enlist

FWIW, my 19 year olds are dropping out after their first year of college to enlist in the Coast Guard. I could not be more proud of them. College isn't always the best decision, especially for someone who is otherwise a bit aimless.

Fuck that. I wouldn't mind my kids serving, but I'll be damned if I let them enlist.

If your ASVAB is above 90  the navy is looking for you to fill just a handful of jobs, and nukes is always the first option they will push people to.

She is doing well in collage tell her to stay there and tell the recruiter that she has gone to the Congo to do mission work.

Sure the .mil is a great experience for some, others not so much. Depends on the individual and their MOS. There was a documentary on the Navy where they followed different crewmen around on a Aircraft Carrier. One mess specialist a woman wanted to be a helo pilot and her recruiter told her no problem sign here.

A best friend went in from collage after the Navy ROTC program. He was in for 18 years and it was both good and bad. The bad thing was it used the best years of his life and he was gone for most of that in the arm pits of the world.

Sixteen years USN here

Aceing the ASVAB could mean anything. I cut a 97. A 99 is the highest you can get from what i u derstand. They lobbied me for the nuke program. Of course I wanted to fly.

If she’s in college keep her there. The navy is having a huge retention problem now. They will throw BS at you and her. Life in the navy is hard by any standard. I’m deployed right now actually. Im very proud of my service and I love my navy but it isn’t easy.

If she wants to join the navy have her go in as an officer after college. Still hard but better pay and better quality of life, somewhat.

Right out of high school (before 9/11), the Marine recruiter came to my house.  I can't remember if I took a practice ASFAB at school or not.  Told him I wasn't interested.  After 9/11, I ended up joining the Army. When I was at MEPS there was a girl there and I can't remember her exact score, but it was under 40.  I think the only MOS they offered her was truck driver or some crap.  She was a complete mess, she wanted to be a legal assistant.  On the other hand, my GT score was over 120 GT can't be over 99, Some of my other scores on the ASVAB were in the 100's and one was 120.  Can't remember exactly what my GT was, but it was in the 90's, didn't have any scores less than 90's.  I pretty much was able to chose what ever I wanted, except combat arms (I'm partially color blind).

Seriously the ASFAB is not hard. I scored a 98.

One of the questions that I remember seeing was. "If a machinegun shoots 600 rounds per minute, how many rounds does it fire in 2 minutes"

You know what is sad. When I was at the recruiter there was a guy who failed it twice. He was stressed about taking it again.

CSB...but true.

Went to an AF recruiter at 26. The district manager was there. After being very honest about my past, the DM told me, "You will never serve in my United States Air Force".

Took the tests, and did score mid/high 90s across the board.

Air Force had a very sudden and earnest change of heart. I got a "moral waiver" (seriously) and some corrective counseling on my defective memory. Should have sent up a red flag, but I was young(ish) and enthusiastic.

Interestingly, the Marine recruiter told me, "We don't give a flying f**k what you've done, sign this paper and we'll have you at Parris Island next week."

I scored a 97 or 8 maybe.

They called me for a long time, even after I started at University. (I got a full scholarship, so by God I was going.)

Fair enough. However, the OP did seem to have a bit of concern that way.

Good on your 19 year olds. The military can give one direction if they don't have it just yet.   OTOH, if a kid is doing well in school and progressing, I'd still discourage them from dropping out. Sometimes going back to school is very difficult and many people, especially girls if they start a family, will never go back, so one might as well finish it while they are young, have no other responsibilities, and are already there in the first place.

To add. I’m a father to a 22 year old daughter that’s in college.

If she was dead set on the military the navy would be last on the list. She’d be at the USAF recruiter.

Do they tell everyone their kid scored well on the ASVAB? They told me my son did well on it. I don't remember the numbers, but my research seemed to indicate that while he did not do poorly, his score really wasn't anything special.

I don't disagree at all! If they were in school to become an engineer/docs/science man/whatever then I would have discouraged it. They need this little adventure, and I'm stoked for them.

Recruiters absolutely have quotas. I was one, and I know.

As for lies: I was taught in recruiter school to NEVER lie to a prospect. If you do, your lie will catch up with you, and your prospect will tell all of his buddies how you fucked him over. You will never get another prospect from that high school again.

To OP: Your daughter should absolutely stay in school. If interested, she might check out what the Navy Reserve has to offer. Last time I checked, the USNR had a program called the "Reserve Officer Candidate" or "ROC" program. In addition, there is the NROTC program, which will pay her tuition and a monthly stipend in exchange for 3 or 4 years active duty after graduation and commissioning.
