Pack rats will cut wires clean, first time I put lights up in the country, miles away from anyone my wires were all cut up. Finally realized it was animals and not humans.

Yep, last year I has some that ended up looking just like that. Squirrels! There is something in the insulation that attracts them from what I read last year. Had old strings in the attic that I put up this year, no problems.

Those cute don't look straight to me. They look chewed. OP is wrong that they aren't being chewed. Because they are.

My friend had his lights cut just like yours, was the squirrels. We thought it was vandalism also but watched one go to town one night.

Squirrels LOVE the vinyl jacket.
Think they like your Xmas lights?
They absolutely LOVE fiber optic cable. Without internal armor, it’s outage time!
Quoted: Are squirrels active at night? Must be rats. I've never seen a squirrel out at night. ETA: OP noticed the lights were out at night, doesn't mean they were cut at night. Squirrels could easily chew them during the day.

The lights are keeping the squirrels awake at night, that's why they are chewing the wires in two.
