I don't really like the whole "stance" thing and a couple of these have it but not too extreme.  Still some great looking cars.

I never personally understood why anyone would pick a Miata after I was pricing a daily driver sports car out a decade or so ago and you could (then at least) get a good 350z cheaper than a similar condition Miata.

Yeah the 350z is heavier but that weight was getting you significantly better looks, brakes, horsepower,  and suspension while also having 48/51 weight distribution

There is a sweet spot in the lower horsepower range where you can be foot on the floor banging gears, wringing the cars neck and still be within road limits, its entertaining.

It's the rental car mentality, if it has four wheels It's going to have more flight time than a B-52 kind of car. If you fit, you kind of go Mr.Toad and find roads that sling you back and forth going from point to point just for the thrill of it.

I had the Eagle version of that, the TSi Turbo, in Tropical Lime Metallic. That sucker was cool. I would hit 130 on the expressway going home after work at 2-4am.

Disposable Speed Machines were Designed in States, two of the three initial marques were US mfg, dev'd Chrysler D (BD - tho derivative of the E3x Gallants) - design at least collaborated, engineering was Chrysler. Built in IL. It did get Mitsubishi engines and the plant was MMA managed, eventually buying the whole shebang, but it was never RHD so not marketed JDM.

So kinda a Japanese badge but maybe not a paradigm example of 90s Japanese stylistic endeavors as others in the thread? The Eagles were the best looking anyway.

FX-16/GTS was a decent car, just ugly as sin. Given this is a design thread. 128 would be awful ambitious given my track time with a AW11 4A-GZE. Maybe not stock?

The FD RX-7 was my dream car in high school.

All of the '90s Japanese sports/GT cars have aged really well, yeah they're down on power compared to their current counterparts and the electronics are ancient but otherwise they drive and feel like a much more recent vehicle.

My 23y/o son has been bitten by the JDM bug. He picked up this 4 door Supra(1998 Toyota Chaser Tourer V) a few months ago. It’s powered by the 1JZ mated with a 5 speed manual.

The Chaser is his daily driver and he has this GR86 for his fun car. It’s got a small turbo and is currently at 300whp with plans to bump it up to 350 or so.

I had a ‘76 280 when I was in high school, I understand his appreciation for the Japanese cars.

More than twice the horsepower and all the wheels, I could overlook the upright C-pillar and less integrated rear. Think the best styled of the 90s homologation specials was probably the Escort RS Cosworth. The Corolla WRC was also great looking car, but the changes (suspension) in homologation reqs, all were TTE builds since no retail production quantities needed to be met.

The production E110 homage 4AFE G6R and G6S (with more actual TTE body parts) Corolla's were cosmetically similar, merely skirts from the Carib and some other clues to sell WRC tie in. If they'd transferred the ST205 drivetrain, it would be worth chasing, but the only thing close was the OZ only Corolla Sportiva (and at 100 about as rare as actual WRC). Still some actual effort - a 7AFE that got turbocharged and some unique, one time body pieces, so not really up to the GTi-R. There's replicas, since works cars are rare and spendy, that come up for sale occasionally. But they aren't that much less since they are often very true to original TTE WRC buildout.

GTi-R look awful good in comparison.

The reason you see early Miata's often is volume and value.  The Miata did 20x the sales through only '97 as some of these. And they're worth about a 10th, average.

The FD RX7 did about 13k over the roughly ten years, Supra A80 11k-ish. You can still find ample availability if you will pay - $42k for FD in average condition, double that for a A80. Nissan sold a shit ton of Z32 (like 40k) debut model year. Then about another 40k through thr rest of the decade to the last trickle in MY '96. They go for roughly half FD and are plentiful. 3000/Stealth/GTO - about the same tho I see these more often than any. Hell I was almost swiped by a wide turning Panama Green VR4 Friday

Esp Supras, the mileage impacts value so you aren't seeing these rolled public as much any more. Many have prolly bought it, but if you want one of those I mentioned, you can choose from hundreds for sale, today.

Many were Brian Morrows Scarab Engineering kits.

Scarab also did about 200-300 "production" (in his shop) conversions.

They were pretty well engineered but like most small gear head startups, underfunded and oft on the bubble.

I always second guess my ability to determine good looking because I will get geeked out seeing a Mazda323 gtr just as much as a Lancia 037 and to most people one is a ricer econobox and the other is good looking, it gets confusing in my head.

It's a reimagining of the old 86 (AE86) Corolla. Those were RWD and had NA 4 cylinder engines, just like the GR86.

Toyota has even used them both in ads.

I think they did about as well as they were able. Nissan doesn't have a lot of R&D money to throw at a low-volume enthusiast car, and there is only so much they can do while being tied to the 350Z/370Z platform.

I think it looks great, and it seems like they're starting to do better at getting these to market. They really bungled the launch.
