I installed CB radios as a yute. I hated semis. The heat, the smell, the working outside of the shop, the discounted install prices, the delayed pay because of a purchase order process, the shit quality antenna parts that would be sold as part of a "package", and anything else that happens when you are on commission, performing labor basically at a truck stop electronics store.
Oh yeah, the hookers... I GTFO of there asap. |

Best truck i drove was a 379 pete, 60 series detriot with a 13 speed. Smooth ride, still my favorite to to this day.

View Quote Thanks for the responses, so why do people buy one over the other the more aerodynamic or the more traditional, it seem like the more aerodynamic is a better financial decision but I presume some people like the old school look and dont care. Sometimes i fantasize about becoming an owner operator and becoming a nomad like bj mckay but without the monkey, what are your thoughts? |

My last truck was a Volvo 770, Cummins N14, 13 speed RoadRanger. In a little over 600,000 miles, I replaced 1 injector, two dashlights, a leveling valve and a cupholder in the sleeper. Best vehicle of any kind I ever had. At the end, the doors still closed like a new car. Never a rain leak or a wind whistle. Paccar and Freightliners have light weight garbage doors.

*On-road newer emissions trucks (are required for my business - have to be 2007+ newer DPF engine)…
Have somewhere around 15 International Pro-Stars with Cummins. For newer DPF trucks, this is what treated us best. Went through Volvo’s, Freights, Sterlings….. Newer DPF Freights with the Detroits - absolutely suck ass. Their DPF system is a nightmare. Regen was required daily - 30 minutes minimum sit time. Drop $2K on DPF maintenance, 30 days later - Regen every day. The Internationals with MAXForce engines are complete garbage - run far far away. They are basically giving them away, and there is a reason. Internationals with Cummins have worked very well for us from new to 600K miles. But DPF still sucks ass. The starters need upgraded and replaced every 300K, DPF’s well maintained, ECU’s were replaced on all trucks over 300K miles…other than that they’re solid. My best most reliable truck is a 1999 FLD120 Freight pre-emissions with a Detroit. Closing in on a million miles with no in-frame/rebuild. Of all the trucks (25 or so) this is the one that I never see on the parts/repair invoices. Owned it since early 2001. My mechanic brings me about $5K-$8K in invoice repairs every week that I approve, and that doesn’t include his salary. |

A 389/W9 will be great (looks, resale value, driver retention) unless you need 8 mpg and go to tight shippers/receivers. Driver comfort and spec'ing auto transmission, Volvo is the "best" All emission engines suck. That's their deal and why gliders were so popular. I have Western Stars (glider and emission) and their quality has gone down tremendously. My 5700 is nowhere near built as well as my 4900's are. Daimler's site available to any owner that allows vin lookup for parts, wiring, etc is second to none though. |

KW interiors are nicer, IMO. I prefer my KW to any of the new trucks. Pre emissions Detroit 60 and a 13 speed manual. |

That’s the busiest batch plant they (my customer) have. Was going to just bring them two or three loads today, but their customer kept bumping up the yardage due to the nice weather. They were blowing through their inventory and are pouring another 350 yards tomorrow. So I ended up bringing four loads and I’m in a Hampton Inn for the night. 630 miles and 14 hours today. I’ll bring another two loads tomorrow and call it a week. |
