As a child of the 80's, I've often tried to think about which year really embodies the decade. Justify your answer with lists from the following (or other) categories. I'll go first. These aren't necessarily 'best of' lists, but culturally significant and considers what we already had up to this year in the 80's (for example, 1980 probably couldn't really embody the 80's because most of the 80's stuff wasn't invented yet, 1989 could but we were arguably on a downward slope of 80's culture by then)
I am going with 1986 (although 1984 is probably a close second) These TV Shows were on the air (and a lot of merchandising/toys to go with them): Miami Vice Season 3 (arguably their best and the season that the testarossa was introduced) Alf Dallas The Cosby Show Knight Rider (last season) L.A. Law The A-Team GI Joe Transformers G.I. Joe He-Man Thundercats Head of the Class Oprah Disney Channel becomes 24 hrs Fox Network launches Events: Challenger Disaster Chernobyl TWA Bombings Berlin nightclub bombings Pan Am hijackings Halley's Comet 1986 World Series (Bill Buckner!) Super Bowl XX (Chicago Bears--Super Bowl Shuffle and the Fridge!) These albums were released: Metallica - Master of Puppets (Cliff Burton dies this year too) Slayer - Reign in Blood Depeche Mode - Black Celebration Van Halen - 5150 (First album with Sammy Hagar) New Kids on the Block Debut Album Ac/dc - Who Made Who The Smiths - The Queen is Dead Run DMC - Raising Hell Bon Jovi - Slippery when wet They Might be Giants Debut Album Beastie Boys - License to Ill Prince and the Revolution - Parade (their last album) These Movies Came Out: Top Gun AND Iron Eagle Platoon Ferris Buellers Day Off Aliens Pixar studios founded The Delta Force Pretty in Pink Highlander Rad Short Circuit Labyrinth Big Trouble in Little China Flight of the Navigator The Transformers Movie Stand by Me Blue Velvet An American Tail Tech/Other: Launch of Nintendo Entertainment System in North America and Europe Mac+/IIGS |

Pretty much. Then all the irrelevant people had to start shilling their boy-loving, white guilt doctrine on us

The 80's were the greatest decade, I was born in 1961, and I'd go back and do it all over again if I had the chance!
|
|
|
No question about it, 1986 was the most "80's" year of the 80's.
|
|
I agree with the OP....I graduated in 1985, the 80s were fantastic, 1986 was a great year.
|
|
Nice job on listing Reign In Blood Best thrash metal album ever.
|
|
Magnum P.I. is missing from the list. I have debated which year was the best...I think somewhere from '84 to '86.
|
|
84-86 were amazing years in music, film, and pop culture. If I had to judge them by the summer of that year, I would go with 1985.
And most of us think of a "year" by the school year. So you have 84/85, 85/86, and 86/87. Of those, I still go with 85/86. My gosh I miss the mid 80s. |
|
86, yes, because that's the year I was born so obviously it's the best.

I was born in 79. My parents kept me as isolated as they could. Outside of school, my only exposure to 80s culture was whatever I could pick up on the 4 local tv channels.
Until 1986 when my older brother came back from the navy. He had a computer that looked like a giant pullout car stereo. We played some game that looked like Galaga, only the graphics were all green and black. He also brought me one of those 'survival knives' from the tv commercials. You know the one, hollow handle with chinesium survival gear and a compass. I thought I was Rambo Jr. Then, he unpacked all of his Playboy and Penthouse magazines. Yeah, I still have a thing for bush. He also brought a VCR. I got to catch up on just about every movie made, even the ones rated R. My brother is an awesome guy. How many men in their 20s would spend an entire summer driving their 7 year old brother around in their 68 mustang? Not many. |
|
I did all in the OP and got my first girlfriend that year. Peak for me.

As an seven/eight year old in 1986, I agree with OP and wish to subscribe to his newsletter.

84-85 was better.
The early 80s still had the care-free, free-love lifestyle up and running that started in the late 60s and continued through the 70s. In 1984 this was still a thing. By 1986, AIDS became scary enough to have an effect on normal heterosexuals. It was only a slight effect, but nevertheless. |

Dude i love this pic..its my whole childhood in one.

Doesn't get much more 80's (1986), than this...

OP I believe you forgot one on the list.
I remember wanting to go with my grandparents to Expo 86. I remember he brought back a picture of a futuristic looking prototype car. It looked pretty rad |

1981: Introduction of the first affordable home computer, Commodore Vic-20.
1982: Introduction of the most popular home computer ever, Commodore 64. 1985: Introduction of the first multimedia computer: Commodore Amiga. 1985: Introduction of the best 8-bit computer: Commodore 128. I may be biased, tho. |

This is a good thread, and OP should feel good about himself. He is a man of character.

Transformers Attack On The Shuttle The Decepticons learned to shoot COM around '86 and finally murdered the shit out of some Autobots |

A while back, I conceived the brilliant idea to find all the iconic film and TV that looms large in my memory, now that that is possible without stirring from my basement couch. I quickly realized that most of it is better off in my memory, because it was sort of terrible. There are exceptions. But most of it is dated as shit. I loved the A-team, but only as a memory. Watching it again...is not a good idea, because it's actually terrible in the zeitgeist of now.

'86 was a great year. Junior in high school, playing bars on school nights and the weekends with my bands. Played at Montreux Jazz Festival twice back then. Chicks everywhere. It was great being single. lol :)

I was born in 1970. Well, Happy Days was a huge thing in that decade, and I watched it regularly. So, recently it became available for streaming.
I got halfway through one episode and it was so, so, SO bad. I mean, terrible. I'll just let the memories suffice instead. I've thought about it, and I think it is partially about the nostalgia; I was eight, mom and dad took care of all the bills, all I had to do was go to school, and dad built the fire every night, and we all sat around watching whatever was available of the four choices. HBO wasn't even a thing until 1979. (Anyone else remember the three button project box switches with clunky detent buttons for Antenna, HBO, Game?)But Wild Kingdom was on PBS, Hee Haw, MASH, etc. Unless the POTUS was on, in which case he was on EVERY broadcast channel. Lemme tell you young'uns a law of life. It's a hell of a lot easier to become accustomed to a new thing than to deal with that same nifty thing going away after you've become accustomed to it. Toilet paper wasn't available til the late 19th century; and now it's considered a staple. |

Hmmm compelling but robocop was 87 and die hard 88
Air wolf 84 equaliser 85 Soo Probably 84 to 88 was the zenith |

Quoted: Oh yeah, I agree--I didn't say any of the things in the list were good, just that they embodied the spirit of the 80's. I can't stand Knight Rider now. A-Team is good for a laugh now and then. Miami Vice has held up surprisingly well, though. View Quote |

I grok you. I am now fast approaching a half a century killing the planet with my exhalations, and I am thinking that pretty much everyone thinks of their early to mid teens as the best time ever. Old enough to do almost anything, still young enough that someone else has all the liability and expense. It stands to reason that everything associated with that time, in your memory, is going to seem like the most wonderful, amazing shit ever in history. Just don't try to do it again. You aren't the same now. View Quote |

First world children, generally, spend their childhood wishing they were older, and the entire rest of their life wishing they were younger again, while glossing over all the benefits of age. You feel like, man, if I could be 15 again, of course, 15 except with all the autonomy and abilities I have now at 37, but none of the hassle. Which isn't a realistic paradigm. It just seems like it should be, in your mind.
There's a loose connection to the attraction of socialism/communism in there somewhere, but I haven't defined it precisely yet. |

One year into owning my first home, first brand new car, 45k a year at 26, ejected my department store catalog underwear
modeling wife of one year in November. Went back to school and became a nose to the grindstone near hermit for over a decade thereafter Yep, pretty much peak 80s for me |

In 1986 the Buick Grand National got intercooled! Sure it's slowish now but a car that rips 13s is nothing to sneeze at.

You mentioned Rad but left out freestyling/BMX. The big names of the sport were really taking off around 85/86 between riders and manufacturers. Haro, Redline, GT.
I was born in '74 and in winter of '86/87 my dad bought a used white 85 Haro FST for me. Wasn't a top of the line Master or Sport, but it was a Haro and I was 12. Found this back in 2014. An 85 with the exact parts I had minus it being white with white barefeet tires. I have a new decal kit, just need to send it out to get it powdered white. Can't bring myself to take it down of the wall. Not even a money thing. I even have a new set of NOS barefeet tires. Attached File 84-88 was really it for me but I agree with OP, 86 was THE year. Oh yeah you forgot all the good porn stars from back then. John Holmes was even still alive (my mom had a c-band dish with nothing scrambled). |
