If you want low energy, Bullmastiff.
He is lazier than any English Bulldog I've had.
Great with kids, strangers kids.
Low shed.
Could be protective if inclined.
Rarely barks, not for a doorbell.

You want higher energy? German Shepherd.
You want shedding?
You want a dog that wants to do something?
He can act protective.
Barks bigly if someone knocks on door.

Mini Dachshund. Greatest dog ever. Very loyal and protective. Loves to be active or lazy, just wants to be with their human.

If you don't want high energy, stay away from miniature Pinschers.

Those little bastards are non-stop action- makes a Jack Russell look lazy.

But... they're fiercely loyal to their families.

For pure goof about, a Pekingese. I had one for 16 years and I miss the little shit everyday.

Collie would be my first choice - They are incredibly smart. Golden Retriever my second choice. For a small dog a Pomeranian they don't know they are little and are good watchdogs.

I vote St Bernard if you can deal with the drool and hair.  He is such a wonderful and gentle dog, he's been stuck to my son like glue ever since we brought him home from the hospital.

This goes without saying, but having your kids help with dog stuff is a great way to teach responsibility.

Partial to Boston Terriers, owned Corgis but the BT is very people centered while corgis just wanted to patrol the yard.
If you do get a Boston be prepared for the kids to compete who gets to sleep with it.

Boxer.

They are the ultimate family dog, clowns that will always keep you laughing, loyal, protective, and great with kids.  Their patience with young ones is at near Sainthood levels.

Great alert systems for anyone that even gets near the house (as most dogs are), with a bark that will make any potential bad guys think twice.

We have two and if I could convince the wife we'd have three.

They don't really care for extreme weather either direction.

Inside lap dogs and we keep their hair short.

OP,,I'm almost 70 and have had dogs all my life. By FAR the best I've had are our last two which were Boxers. They are pillows for children. Fast, strong and powerful. Fiercely loyal and protective. Alert and smart. Family entertainment with a built in talent show every day.

THIS.

I didn't have Boxers until I was 39, and as far as I'm concerned I missed out on 39 years of experience with the most amazing breed on the planet.

We will only have Boxers from here on out, and plan to rescue some in the future.

Must be good with kids.

Suggestions?

Don't "buy" a dog at all.  Go get a rescue, and teach your children compassion, and value for life.  You might save more than one individual at a time.  Also, people that professionally breed pets are the lowest forms of humanity.

We have had Boxers for many years, and they are great family dogs, and although a lot of folks say they are too high energy, we have found they adjust to your lifestyle.

They have the goofiest personality, can even spell I think, are great watchdogs, don't shed, but can fart a dead rat, and slobber everywhere, oh and snore like a truck running.

We are on our 3rd one now.
I lost my 2nd one, another European Boxer male December 24th of 2022, from a weak heart.
He was 10 years old.
A sad day-

I had a European Boxer who was my K9 partner for about 7 years.
He was all about the job, while on the job.

Off the job, he was a slobbery, friendly family dog who knew no enemies, unless I uttered a word in Chech.
Then it was all business.
He just knew the difference between off-duty and on-duty.

Sadly, he has been gone since 2016.
He made it to 13 years.

You've been blessed by some long-lived Boxers, as most seem to only make it to 8-9 years.

We have two now, and they are 9 and 5.  The older is the female, and she's the alpha of the two (our family members are above them both in pack structure) and the most amazing dog I've ever known.  When she passes, I will be taking time off work.

Boxers are the best!

And shop, don't adopt.  You don't want someone else's problem, especially around kids.

I like the Aussie. I have one. But I don’t think they are a beginner dog breed plus they need a lot of room to run 31 hours a day.

Can’t argue this having had several.

One suggestion for any owner of any breed.

Get them as pups if possible. Once they settle in, manhandle them. No not abuse, touch them everywhere daily. Feet, nails, ears, tongue, butt. Literally everywhere.

Lay on the floor with them, use them as a pillow/foot rest whatever. Belly rub them with your foot. Again get them used to being touched and mauled a bit. I’ve never had a dog of mine snap or even growl at my kids or grandkids and they get rough sometimes and need to calmed down.

Come feeding time sit with them, put your hands in the bowl, feed them one piece at a time out of it. Don’t withhold food. Mine get free choice and only eat what the need. Doing this I’ve never had a food aggressive dog.

It’s work but has paid off well for me over decades of dogs.

Don’t get a doodle anything.

Don’t get a doodle anything.

Just get a Standard Poodle.

Much cheaper, smart as hell, and an all around great dog.

Lots of people like to throw out blanket statements about how Doodles don’t shed, but the couldn’t be more wrong.

When you are making a mutt, with a poodle and something else, the something else’s genes could throw a puppy that sheds.

No doodle backyard puppy mill will tell you that.  They all claim their dogs don’t shed.

It’s a crapshoot.

Just get a Standard Poodle.

Getting them a haircut once every two or three months is not that big of a deal.

Not having gobs of hair all over is totally worth it.

We have two labs and a poodle, and there is hair everywhere, but not from the poodle.
View Quote

You are spot on about the crap shoot. You might get a neurotic dog that sheds

One of ours is 100 golden personality and poodle skin. The other sheds a bit but nothing like a full golden. She also doesn’t like to jump in the pool like our other one.

Totally disagree about getting one though, they are absolutely wonderful dogs and both seem to have poodle “smarts” but aren’t anywhere near as jumpy as all the standard poodles I’ve been around. Of course, ymmv

Personally, I wld get a Golden.     Never ran into a bad one.

Although my oldest daughter had good luck with her female GSD.    Sadly, the dog died a few days ago due to some type of heart condition.   Dog was only 7.    But she was excellent with the twinnies.
