Grilling with charcoal, would like to smoke occasionally.  Just get an old school Weber type and a separate smoker?  The charcoal all in ones with the separate chamber for smoking, or a kamodo style?  What say the hive mind?

Small family, don't need to grill for many.

Honestly, that's not a bad option. A weber kettle and build a UDS and you're golden. You can always get a stick burner with a separate smoke chamber, but if you cheap out on it, that box will rust out in 2 or 3 years.

+1. Used the kettle for some shorter smokes on small cuts of meat. It works, but takes some practice and babysitting.

Just added a Camp Chef pellet grill/smoker.  20 hour smoke on a couple of pork butts. No problem, set it and forget it. Came out with a nice crust and a big beautiful smoke ring.

Very nice pits, but my Gas 2 coal has them beat albeit it’s smaller but I don’t grill for 100 people

Interesting. I'm in the market for a gas/smoker combo since i'm sick of using little chip baskets in my gas grill. Any other gas/smoker options like that I should take a look at?

Does it have a door between the gas and charcoal side so you can cook on gas with smoke?  That would be awesome.

For cheaper grills I prefer a Weber kettle over the drum style grills. Much easier to maintain a consistent temp on a Weber.

I bit the bullet on a Big Green Egg two years ago and never looked back though. I kinda want one of those wood pellet deals now though. Mostly for the ease of "set it and forget it" smoking. I don't have all day to babysit a traditional smoker.

I had a CharGriller with the side smoke box. Did some mods to it and it worked well.
But the problem I have is dedicating the time to smoking. I dont have the time.
I gave up on smoking my own after 4th of July about 6 years ago. I had spent $50.00 on a nice brisket, brined it, rubbed it down and started it at 0500.
It was going perfect and just about to stall when a thunderstorm came through.
Cooled it off and killed it. I tried bringing it back in the oven but was unsuccessful.
Ended up throwing it away.

Said to hell with it.

But I do grill with a Weber Genesis silver all the time. Best gas grill I have ever used and just snagged another one in pristine shape off of CL for $50.00.

Pitboss Pellet grill

I haven't used my gas grill for months now.

Burgers, Hotdogs, Steaks, Pizzas, Pork Shoulders.
Spaghetti, garlic bread

The flavor is amazing.

To me it takes roughly the same amount of time to warm up as the gas. Maybe a few extra minutes...
Pellets have come a long way.

Im looking for a new grill also and deciding between these 2.

Does the egg take longer from charcoal start to cooking? Ive heard they take a while to come up to temp.

They work in a pinch. Lil Bro's big gas rig took a dump last Memorial Day at our gathering at his lake place. We salvaged the cooking with a little cheap charcoaler from Wallyworld.

I have a Broil King Keg.  Its a kamado style, only steel instead of ceramic.  Between the inner and outer wall is oven grade insulation.  I love it.  Its light enough to wheel around to the front yard when we're partying out front and unlike a ceramic, it wont crack and fall apart when you move it.  They even have a hitch adapter you can haul it around on your truck.  It does everything...225 for 20+ hours without adding charcoal, 700 degree pizzas.  I bought a pit controller for the long cooks.  Its nice to set it and forget it.

Those are nice grill pots. My father in law had owned one since he retired from the AF back in the early 70s. Bought it in Japan and brought it home on a hop. Back before they called them "Big Green Eggs". His was brown and was called a "hibachi pot". Cooked tons on it over the decades. His son is still using the ancient thing.

same here, going to pick up my third one today. We've been in our home for thirty years, the first 15 years I played around with a series of propane grills. I grew out of it. My problem is that mine don't necessarily rust out they burn out. As you say, 6 years is about the limit.

during the summer I grill about 4-5 nights a week, 6 years is about the limit. At the end of 6 years, they're pretty much toast.

Came here to post that at a hundred bucks a pop, it's easy enough to buy two.  If it's just the wife and I (87% of the time), fire up one.  Family gathering, or if I want to do something like grill up a batch of sweet corn while the steaks are cooking, roll out the second.

Thinking about rigging up a flexible duct thingy and a staggered mount where I could use the first as a firebox for the second for a smoker setup.

Mine seems to seal up great. The doors have seals and each section locks into place. My lower door, which accesses the charcoal basket, leaked some at first. But has since self sealed after some use.

I can load it up with charcoal, throw a pork butt on it, then go to bed.  Will still be at temp in the morning.

I have a camp chef, it barely makes a smoke ring regardless of pellet type.
Disappointing in that regard, but it's the only one out there you don't have to take apart and vacuum out the fire pot.
It's got a little trap door you pull and it dumps the ash into a cup.
That said I'm probably gonna dump it for a pit boss pro.

I have a large big green egg.  I was seriously thinking of adding a pellet grill, but the Masterbuilt gravity series looks very interesting.  Watch some Youtube videos on it, and see what you think.  It basically functions like a pellet grill but will use any type of charcoal, and you can add wood for smoke.  It's a smoker and a grill.
