I had a small hand in this.
I initially reassembled it to complete non running condition for display. (ever tried to find rusty nuts and bolts?)
The owner got tired of looking at it and wanted to ride, so he took it to a Pro who got it running.
Alas, life happens and it'll be someone else's soon.

In 1973 I was looking for a bike, A former dealer had 8 Indian Chiefs he would sell. $750 for a complete running bike and $25 each for two complete engines sitting on his picnic table. I bought a 1973 Harley Davidson FLH with 700 miles on it for $2700. I was young and couldn't get a loan for the Indians but could for the Harley.

That of course is a very cool bike.

Sometime back someone here started a thread where he had bought a indian and restored it , later bike (1940?) that was very interesting to me from the viewpoint that you could actually ride it , not just a display piece

An old neighbor of mine in Massachusetts had a Mass State Police Indian Motorcycle in his basement.

It was not in a running state but imagine it would have been worth quite a bit.  It "disappeared" shortly after his death and he was the last person occupying the property.  Guessing a relative grabbed it before the estate could be settled.

If I had a way to post them, I have quite a few Indian pics I'd share. Including a 1940 Four with its owner, taken at the 2014 Vintage Motorcycle Days event. The bike was ridden often according to him.

Several years ago, a local fellow past away that had a several motorcycles in his barn. 2 Vincent’s… 1 a Black Shadow, and the other a Black Knight. Wish I had the the money… the Black Shadow is one of my favorite bikes ever.

Old friends bedroom. I remember when he bought this.  He had heard rumors of an old guy driving it around a small town here in SC.  Drove to that town and started asking random older people if they remembered who it was.  Someone knew they guy and told him where he lived.   Still had it out in the shed in very bad condition.
Everything was gone through meticulously.  He rode it for a while.

As a young man my Dad had Indian 4's.  He said that if pushed hard the rear cylinder would seize.  That is why police departments did not buy them.

I posted some pictures of this one around 2021 putting tires on and making it a one piece roller.
Like a Dr. the most important thing is ..first, do no harm.
Of course the hacksawed/tin snipped tires might take exception to that.

Wow! That a neat piece of history there.

Even more so that she's operational and can be ridden.

Wow that has bid up fast very early in the auction. I'm in the restore it crowd. It's just going to rust and break more.

I was following that auction for three days. It's worth going to the start and run videos...that bike is a serious time capsule

Early last spring my wife and I were walking the dogs, and met an old guy wearing a denim work shirt with Indian embroidered over one pocket. I asked him if he used to ride (he has to be mid 70s), and he said he still did. In fact, he said, "I have two bikes in my garage at our house in WA, a xxxx Chief and a xxxx Indian 4." I love Chiefs, but wasn't all that familiar with the 4s. Went home and looked them up on BaT...holy smokes they knock down serious money. Next time I ran into him I asked how often he went out. He kind of fess'd up he really doesn't ride that much, mostly just polishes them...

BaT has some really good stuff up here lately. There's a mint pagoda roof 1971 MB 280 SL that had a $78,000 bid this morning. Next to it is an almost identical 1971 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet. from the looks of it out of the same garage. First day on the block, and the bid was $250,000. It's up over that now. My mom drove a '72 280 SE 4.5, she should have gone two door convertible, dammit

Flawless...
