If you know the history between Mad Dog and Mission Knives, having Mad Dog make a sheath for an MPK is a near impossible task, but the SEALs were successful with their request.  In addition to the knife, I also received a ton of paperwork from the 1993 knife trials, which contain firsthand reviews of the MPK-TI knives written by SEALs who used the knives in the field.  My knife looks new, it somehow escaped testing unharmed.  This is an extremely rare set, probably unique, and these documents have never been shown publicly before now.

Yep, I'm quoting myself, but it's for a good reason.  I recently picked up the companion blade to the titanium Mission knife shown above - a extremely rare Mission Knives stainless steel SCU!

5 SCU's were built for testing by the SEALs during the 1993-4 trials and 9 were built for collectors after the trials.  This knife is number 6 of those 9.  It's pretty cool to have both versions of the Mission knives that were submitted to the trials (with paperwork!), especially since they won the contract!

Even though this is a very rare knife, there's actually one listed on ebay right now, if anyone is interested.....

Tried a 940-1 a while back, and didn’t fall in love with it. Now I want to try one again, and am itching for a 940-1701 or 940DLC-1802. Feel like I need some 940 variant to round out the collection.

What other brands should I check out, I tend to focus on Benchmade, ZT and Spyderco but want to broaden my horizons a bit. Lets say under $150 for an EDC

As OP therefore Lord and Sovereign of this thread I approve you quoting yourself.

The amount of detail and provenance in your posts is crazy. It's pretty cool to see the amount of work that went into the knife off and that these things still exist

Awesome post

Smaller that I had expected (that's what she said), but is not micro. I'd say small Sebbie sized. Feels slightly unbalanced while in a normal grip, but if you choke up and use the choil, it's very comfortable. Detent and bearings are GREAT!. Rubbing a finger over the edge, it doesn't feel all that sharp but will shave hair easily. My thumb pads are so calloused that it makes it hard to get a good feel using that method.

Here's a pair of Sea Wolf knives made by Gus Marsh. The top is 1 of 200 one-piece knives that he made in the early 1980's, the bottom is 1 of 26 three-piece knives that he made for his UDT and SEAL buddies in 1967-68. He had the three-piece knives made at a machine shop in Subic Bay, Philippines when he was stationed there during the war. This original three-piece version is extremely rare and I know of 1 or 2 others in collections.

As you can see in the last 3 pictures, the three-piece knife is marked on both sides of the handle and on the blade. ARG stands for Amphibious Ready Group, the numbers could refer to a deployment or ship and the CPT could refer to the Captain or some kind of team.  On another forum, I asked Gus what the other markings meant and who the three-piece knife was given to, but he couldn't remember.

These aren't military issued knives, but I think they're pretty damn cool.  The design was so successful that a few companies successfully produced knives in this pattern, such as Scubapro's "The Knife" that features faux staghorn grips.  These things weigh quite a bit, I imagine that if I took one on a dive I could leave some lead back on the boat!

Some years back I discovered knifemaker Mark Hazen of North Carolina on a forum.  I had Mark make this fixed blade initially and liked his work so much that I have two other Hazen fixed blades.  Mark now markets mid-tech knives and TOPS uses some of his designs.

This one is a Custom Hazen Recon Fighter 154CM Blade, 5 ½” long, 3/16” thick with a 58 RC hardness.  The blade has a non-reflective matte finish.  I might add that the false edge is razor sharp.  Overall length 10 ¾” long.  Green linen Micarta scales with thong hole.

Blade profile is a scaled down version of your snakewood knife.  It's A2 at 63RC, cryo treated.  The guard is G10 and the handle is marbled carbon fiber I made as a viability test.  It has chopped red linen for color.  The knife is a through tang, secured by nut in thread in the butt, then capped by CF and permanently glued together.  The pocket clip sheath is the second sheath of this type I've made, I wanted the fit loose so the clip wouldn't just let go when drawing the knife, so the snap was added for retention over the guard.
