Jeep with a winch.

We found a couple of boulders in our yard.  One part had been part of a creek bed in the past.

If you get enough cable and snatch blocks, you can move just about anything.

Ever see a guy pull a 12" tree out the ground with a riding lawnmower? You're about to.

Can you get a truck to it?

Place a car hood next to the rock. Wrap a chain around the rock and pull it onto the car hood.  Drag the hood/rock combo with the truck to where you want it.

Might work and the cost of an old car hood would be minimal.

All great suggestions.

But you bought 40 acres and your biggest concern is moving rocks around?
What are your plans for the acreage?
Why not get a small tractor with a loader...
Are you going to maintain pasture in the summer?
What's the plan to handle managing 40 acres in anything other than native growth without some measure of equipment?

Meh...I'm on 5 acres and all I have is a push mower.   Nature is pretty capable of maintaining itself depending on what the landowner is wanting from it.

Sorry if I'm boring.  Lived a good portion of my adult life with no or really bad insurance. Hammer drill rental is waaayyy cheaper than a ER copay. Forget it if your admitted.

But I like boring.  I'm flat broke. But nearly debt free.

Heavy equipment. Farmers used to plough around the big boulders until dozers came along. I’ve seen a few glacier dropped boulders the size of sheds and small houses that are still right where God wanted them even in an age where D-11s exist.

Unfortunately this OP ^ Save up some cash and attempt to make friends w / some one w/ a decent sized excavator or dozer .  Manual efforts are a wasted enterprise .

Test of manhood.

If you can't pick it up and move it, it doesn't get moved.

Either that, or do it the smart way and rent/borrow some equipment, unless you have no value for your time or body.

This actually isn't a bad idea. A bit of snow might help. A winch and a shit ton of cable would also help.

But how big are these boulders? I just had some boulders placed on my new property. I would not want to have to move without heavy equipment.

If FL maybe, they are just rocks here.

We did some boulders as a guy's place one time, got a full load for like 300 bucks, then put them where he wanted.

He was amazed, because at his place in FL he had to pay hundreds of bucks for a single boulder, which came from out of state.

Low brisance explosive.  Lots of it. Use a shovel to place it under the rock.

Unless you want to make smaller rocks, then go with a drill and a high brisance explosive,

Need to know how big.

3' you can move pretty easily, 4' is harder, but doable.
Bigger than 4' is going to take rigging of some sort. A sled with rollers is the best method... still have to get it on the sled.

Best bet is to hire it done if they are huge.

I moved a bunch this summer with a come-along.

If you have land, think about a harbor freight trencher. Worth every penny.

Whatever you do, be sure you don't post a picture of your 'boulder' or give any clue as to how big the damn thing really is. You might actually get some helpful advice if you did that, so be sure not to do it.

Dig a hole next to boulder.  A big hole.  Roll boulder into hole with long lever.  Cover with dirt.

Part of the challenge here is how big is the boulder, including the parts that might be buried/below grade.

Limestone/granite boulder, figure 175 lbs per cubic foot.   Sandstone, less, around 150 lbs per cubic foot.

If I was to be dragging around a boulder weighting around half a ton, I would use a rental truck with full insurance coverage for any damages to the vehicle.

I have an abandoned rock quarry for my shooting range on the back of my property, still shows up by DEQ number on satellite maps. They mined the rip-rap there when they built the dam down the river back in the 50's

I've got some sandstone boulders the size of school buses I'd like to move to strategic locations on my property

paraphrase of joke badly remembered
no attempt to try to actually tell the joke

mafiosi in jail upset about not being able to do his garden

tells visitor (obviously being listened to) about the guns and money hidden in the garden

cops come and tear up garden looking for stuff that isnt there

next visit: visitor says that half the garden has been tilled and the cops will be done with
the other half pretty soon and we will be able to plant the tomaoes

so....whatcha got hidden under that rock, buddy?

I recently got 40 acres at my place with 8 wooded that's loaded with huge boulders. Without renting equipment or hiring it out do any of you have any genius ideas how to move them? I'm thinking of building a stone boat to use behind my truck. I'm thinking if we get a couple inches of snow the sled with the Boulder may move easier. Looking to get a Boulder down about 200 yards out of the woods and down a gravel driveway.

Sorry I'm poor and hate paying others for things I can do even if it takes me 10x longer.

If one can get the VW sized rock onto the stone boat, moving it is easy and doesn't require snow or flat ground.  Getting the rock out of the hole its been in for 10,000 years since the last ice age is the hard part.

One can make a stone boat out of a 4x8' sheet of 3/8" steel with the front curled up like a tobagan with a press brake.  Weld loops on the front to attach 1/2" log chain for towing.

Stone boats can be found on farm auctions, more common in the retirement or estate type.

Edit -- Here's an example of the late 1940s style commonly found that's roughly 3x6'.  Check Craigslist...

@Orion_Shall_Rise is halfway to the answer.

Here is the other half.  Lower the boulder onto the stone boat & pull the stone boat with an ATV or tractor.
