The big trick is to prehydrate. Day before drink water with weak electrolites till your teeth float. Riding out of my front door is coming to an end here till after the heat breaks and monsoons start. |

Been under the weather since Saturday....so maybe tomorrow I will ride. I had to cancel my Tulsa Tough race this next weekend. Family and I are doing a last vacation before my son heads to college. So I say it is for a very good reason.

My oldest graduates HS Friday night. He and I are both doing a race 8am Saturday morning a little over an hour away. After the race we gotta get home unload bikes and then drive 6 hours to the coast for a weeks vacation. I plan on being a zombie by Saturday evening |

View Quote The dryness is a big factor. if you don't pre-hydrate you'll spend the whole ride trying to catch up rather than maintaining. which means massive headaches. at the end of winter, we don't get much moisture till monsoon season. like 90+ days with no measurable rain. then monsoons hit usually late July. massive storms in the afternoons, often daily. once they start temps sit in the 70's for the remainder of the summer. September is the month to visit NM. Right now we're in the thick of the dry season... the desert right now, impassable on anything less than 4.4 at 6PSI. we call it powdered sugar sand. |

Its really not too bad, we get reasonable riding all year with a few exceptions. There's enough variations between high mountains and lower desert to find something reasonable. Its not Phoenix hot. I got some rides in this weekend both shorter 45 Saturday and 30 today...but I am working on a new bike rider so doing smaller miles for him. Helping new riders is our future so I always like to help new people riding.

I just got the wife a gravel bike. She hasn't ridden a bike since she was 9 and has only ridden singlespeeds.
She was nervous but it came back to her. After a few runs up and down the street to figure out shifting and disk-brakes, she did 6 miles of paved trails and dirt singletrack (incl 600' of hills). She loved it! I'm super proud of her. |
