One of them has even had pieces used as the advertisement art for the Buffalo Bill Show. That is a huge honor for him. All that said, those weren't the shows that we took taxidermy to. It was the WSAA WY State High School Art Symposium in Casper that requested we not bring the taxidermy anymore. That and the changing of entry fees that put the nail in the coffin for us going there. The Haiku task board was pretty amazing and exactly why arfcom has made these projects so much more than I thought possible. That organic creative process that grew out of a simple joke was incredible. The kids latch on to suggestions that are posted here and pull the projects in crazy directions. The everybody gets a trophy doesn't work when the other art teachers don't get as involved with their students. Most any of them could do most of what guns is doing if the school has a wood shop, staples, poster board and a plan. Rather than try to compete, they bring Cancel Culture into it, which kind of bums me out about my next door neighbor state falling into that trap even more fully now. |

I have to remind myself......it will be fine. Students come back in Wednesday next week. I start again on Monday with in-service....Tuesday is planned as the day to move the 1/2 scale Sopwith Camel. We will move it up and possibly back and over a bit to make room for the Raptor. Students will have different schedules so it will be interesting to see how my team gets mixed up and how the new mix works together. |

View Quote I'm often taken back when talking to new to the district students about their past Art classes. Many really don't do much art of any kind. It's mostly studying others art. That is a pretty common philosophy on how it should be done. Definitely not my way of thinking. I know a lot of that comes from budget constraints. Art is expensive. I just spent $2000 for oil paint. Nothing else. 200ml tube are close to $50 per tube for some colors. My school budget for the year is $5,600......hasn't changed in 25yrs. Most schools just can't and don't support that. I imagine many teachers work with what they have. A project like this that runs close to $3000......seems out of their grasp. Arfcom is the secret ingredient that makes it possible. Many parents even here would gladly shut down my program as they see no value in teaching "Art" . That is just a fact of some in our society. ETA: I had to do a presentation to teachers from other districts about our projects and how they work. My thesis statement was that tea hers need to take care to not get stuck in the ruts of comfort and familiarity. Teachers like to stick with what they have done and are familiar with. Changing to a project based curriculum is overwhelming to many. People don't like change. My projects are not traditional "art" but I justify this to those who ask as teaching not just the essentials, but also stressing attention to detail,, problem solving, work ethic, working as a team, leadership, and persistence. A team of teachers could easily take these projects and teach it across a host of disciplines giving context to math, science, engineering, and history. That takes change in philosophy, and getting away from teaching to the ACT . Our society doesn't really see that as the way forward. |

You have a program worth supporting. A true teacher is VERY hard to find nowadays, as most I see are either regurgitating syllabus slaves or activist socialist drones, or worse, the good ones who are cowering in fear for their jobs from the circling Soros harpies, waiting to pounce on any deviation from The Agenda. You, sir, are none of those, admirable, and worth supporting in your endeavors.

Oh, and yesterday at the range, I ran into one of my former team leaders from 2019-20.....you know, one of the Covid grads. He was shooting his AR with his family. I remember when he was assembling his rifle.
He was continuously asking questions on parts. I realized I hadn't seen him since the schools got shut down and we had to finish online. He was leading our team working on the John Deere Space tractor and put serious work in on Marine One as a Junior. He hasn't been back since. He told me he would stop by Tuesday and see the latest work. |

Looks like I need to dust off my presentation for these projects. I was asked to give a presentation to the WY state CTE (culinary, robotics, CAD, Graphics, industrial arts, woods, welding, agriculture, ect..) teachers this summer. They will be here in Powell for a convention in June, and will be able to wander around the H.S. to see all the projects. |

It would be pretty cool if you could have a tablet in each area showing progress photos and video for each project. Obviously budget couldn't cover something like that. I'll have to see if the district has some leftovers that we can set up. I know upu guys have suggested this before. It's a great idea. I'd love to see it happen. Android would be most familiar to me, but I think my district may have some old Apple iPads. Let me check this week. We need 8 for the rooms, but one more for the Unicorns would be cool. Something around a 10 or 12inch tablet would be great. Maybe just those picture frame type tablets might be a more ecomical way to go. Just needs to be able to display pictures. I'm a little worried about being able to lock them out to keep some student from uploading and changing the images. I'm trying to think like a teenager. Easy enough to secure them. I talked to the Principal today and he thinks we could do this at the end of the year this year with his budget. He will need an idea of what we want, and I need to talk to the IT department....he was thinking they would be cloud based, but I'm not sure that's as easy as just loading up each tablet with pictures from bluetooth or thumbdrive. It sounds like there will be money to make this happen. |

Cloud offers more flexibility in updating and delivering content vice having to handle multiple devices individually. |

Maybe actual plaques on the wall for 15 years from now when OP is retired & all the installed displays are broken, and the pictures are in formats no longer easily accessible?

Life is about choices.
If you make a mistake once, it's a mistake. You make the same mistake again, that's a choice. |

There was discussion of moving it permanently but, I think you make a solid argument that it needs to be back up there. I'll get on it. We moved it yesterday to make room for the other Raptor. |

This could be for any of your projects, from taxidermy to Bearded Man and beyond. You control the website and what goes on it. Visitors--or students--could scan the QR code at any time on their own media devices, and the presentation could be viewed easily and frequently, without having to mess with any hardware at all. It would be technically simpler, eliminating the use of quickly outdated and eventually degraded/diminished hardware...as well as providing as much information as you want, simply and securely. All updates/additions/revisions would only have to be done at a single point. It's a safe bet that all of your visitors and interested parties already have their own media devices (phones, tablets). It would literally take up no room other than a smallish card--down to the size of a postage stamp--at each project location. There would be no requirement to acquire/maintain/oversight of a collection of hardware devices. ETA: You know...if you did this with YouTube videos of your projects, it could result in another income stream for your projects. Maybe your school has a multimedia class that could make this a project? Every one of your displays could be showcased with its own sounds, music, effects, and interactions. The sky would be the limit. For example: https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/166803/E6735774-037A-4BA7-886B-CA11636FCFFF-2230191.jpg Visitors who--for whatever reason--don't have the time or equipment to view project histories at the time of their visit could also simply be handed a piece of paper--a program, if you will--with all the project QR codes on it, and could enjoy viewing your presentations at their own leisure anytime--for literally almost no cost. Hell...for that matter, a simple code the size of a student's picture in your yearbook could be the gateway to tons of pictures, videos, and multimedia history. View Quote Love the idea. We did something like that once down at the State Art Symposium. We didn't see much use of the opportunity. That said, I think I will talk to the Robotics teacher. He has been having his class film all the projects with drones. He has some great video and I think he teaches a web development unit too. They might be able to put this together. I think having both options would be great |
