And on high heat too. It MIGHT fit a newborn now. MAYBE.

Now I have to find something I can inflate and stick inside it to get it to get to wearable size. It WAS my favorite hat, US Mil OD green.

My fault, I was in a hurry to get the laundry done and didn't remove it before I transferred the load from the washer to the dryer.

It was already pretty snug which I liked, now, well, head crushing snug is more like it. I doubt I could fit a softball in it without stretching it out some.

I've never had any luck trying to expand wool after it shrinks.  Good luck.
When I married my wife, I had a beautiful L.L. Bean 100% queen size wool blanket.  She didn't know that you shouldn't wash wool, so she washed and dried it at home.  It will fit a single bed now.

I still have my black wool watch cap issued at Paris Island in 1982. It's been an outdoor work/camping/hunting/fishing hat forever. I washed it for the first time last year. Had washed in Woolite. The water turned almost black.. air dried or and it's G2G. I won't wait 37 years to wash it again though.

Shrank a nice Pendleton coat like that.

Soak it in a bowl of water with a lot of hair conditioner for half a day, swish it around occasionally. You're relaxing the hairs.
Then attemp to reshape it, blot mostly dry.  Put it on your head and wear it dry.  You'll need to remove it and stretch while it dries.

Good luck

Consider yourself lucky OP

I misplaced an expensive merino wool watch cap, bought in Finland
Found it about a year later....the moths had found it before I did
Not a lot of it remained
It HAD been a great cap, will be on the hunt for a replacement before next winter hits

Not much you can do.
Try hot water soaking then try to get it over a big stock pot then it dry for a long time.
I had an unwashed one the was too tight and the pot trick worked.

A watch cap is what Marines and Sailors wore on their heads when they stood watch in cold weather. Fuckin' kids today have beanies and woodbies, like toddlers.

Because I usually wash it and then let it air dry. It shrinks a little but wearing it once or twice is just enough to fit perfectly. I had a lump cut out of my head above the neck a long time ago and the nerves were cut. While they partially grew back that area is really sensitized and if it's cold and windy, I'll get a massive headache immediately a lot of the time. A tight fitting wool watch cap keeps that from happening. [and I'm bald on top O' the hill.

No, a watchcap is usually made of itchy polyester/wool blend and is longer so you can double it up over your ears.  A beanie is usually made of polyester fleece and not long enough to double up.  Also not as warm or as durable as a watch cap; but much less itchy.

General Jim's in Clare has them for like $8.00.  Not sure if they have green in the regular watch cap though. I know they have green Jeep caps with the brim. I'm thinking about picking one of those up.
