Commandos make their way over a bomb crater

The censor has denied us recognition of this Sherman stuck in a bomb or shell crater in the middle or Red Beach 1.

One of the 3.7inch AA guns in it's enclosure. The square compartments are the magazines that housed the ready to use shell's. There were central magazines that stored the amunition nearby.

Okay guys, I found this photo yesterday and I have no idea what the half spheres are on this PzKpfw III.  Any ideas?

You're probably right that it's a Befehlswagen.  I don't see the star antenna for the FuG 6 but it's likely hidden in the tree branches.  But I don't think those are speakers.  I'd think you'd be able to see the voice coil in the center.

Then I would have to go with microphones perhaps for locating/ ranging enemy artillery or a listening post.

I'm wondering if that is some sort of evolutionary step in the Uhu.

I just don't think those are speakers or some sort of sound detection system.

I think we may be on the right track.  But I don't think it's any of the infrared lights they were developing.  Outside of the fact that it doesn't look like the 60cm Uhu:

I would think that like any illumination device it would have the ability to be aimed.  They look like they're in a fixed position on the hull.  Frankly I'm still completely stumped.

I've looked through all my reference books as well and found exactly bupkis.  But I think you're right, it has to be something experimental.  If for no other reason than we can't seem to find any other photos of it and no one I've talked to knows shit about it.

The reason I say that is on the Western Front the Allies were very good at taking German equipment that was something they had not seen and putting it in armor collection yards for further study. If this tank had been seen on the Western Front there would have been pictures taken of it and it would have ended up in one of Zaloga's books.

I don't think the Russians did that much not, from what I have seen.

possible, I think they did capture stuff they thought important but if it was a one off it might have been destroyed by crew or enemy fire. I mean it does not look like those pieces would take much to get blasted off the tank. Also the russians are really stingy with releasing photos of the war.

The open, flat terrain seems to favor your theory.  Pretty confident it's not anywhere in western Europe.  And PzKpfw III was often used as Befehlswagens even in Tiger and Panther units.  Although clearly there were Befehlswagen variants of both the Panther, Tiger, and Königstiger.  I don't believe Panzer Befehlswagens were used very often in Panzerjäger units.
