yep, that is a business model that will result in  the business closing.

This is what ultimately happens:

"Do you carry ABC, I can't find any"

"I can order that for you and have it within a week"

I can order it myself and have in in a few days, I came in here to pick it up today, thanks anyway"

LGS are the same way.

“We can order it in for you”

Naw I’m good.  Can do it myself and cheaper.

OK, what's the deal.

I cannot play any musical instrument. I cannot sing. I am not musically inclined in any way.

But I click on this thread every time it pops up.

Now I want a guitar and  also want to build a guitar.

So what's the deal with that? Why? What would I do with them (I'm not taking lessons)?

Any enlightenment would be appreciated?

I've progressed to end stage GAS now.  It's not longer guitars.  Now it's PAs, keyboards, and Heaven help me I just ordered a drum kit through Sweetwater.  I rationalized the drum kit because I already have a full set of hardware and cymbals just sitting around collecting dust.

Beware, all you young dudes, it can get worse.  Way worse.

You do what I did, teach yourself how to play. Then buy more guitars than you could possibly ever play competently.

This is me not too long ago...still don't consider myself a player, but I'm getting there...
I had to put down a cheap tele just to type.

As for GAS, they are pretty and pretty cool; what started as buying something for my son to learn on has
lead to 4 electrics, 1 bass, 1 acoustic in the house...we got orange and red and blue and black, and a couple bursts.

I should probably do an NGD thread in the music forum...

Kudos to not getting caught up in the appreciation of owning fine workmanship just because.  They are tools for you.  For many of us they are also something more.  My guitars from Ron Thorn and some of my acoustics (which I do actually play but I admit one would be enough for that) are works of art to my eye.  Guns have a subtle appeal that I can't explain and I admit I need far less than I own.  Especially as a 70 year old semi-cripple who will not participate in any future wars or revolutions.

Here are some of my guitars to show why I had to have them and happy to still own them.

Funny enough I have the same attitude towards guns.  I've got a few fighting rifles and pistols, and then a few analogues for training and that is it.

Not necessarily...
12th fret intonation could be spot on. There could be other things that maybe aren't quite right, that could result in such a non-typical intonation pattern.
-uneven string height
-fret wear
-neck pocket to bridge relationship
-ramped nut slot

messing around with the pink and black guitar from a page or 2 ago. It has a single pickup, with an onboard pre-amp powered by a 9v battery, as is standard in the Laiho guitars. This is supposed to boost the high pitched squeals and lead guitar playing. This thing would be perfect for a cat owner to send them up the walls or flying under the couch

not perfectly played but is an example https://vocaroo.com/162Etzza2iXR

It was a teaser, I was going to wait and post an actual pic of it when it gets delivered. But I guess that's kind of a dick move.

I'm excited because I'm a bassist, not a guitarist, and while I've been trying to teach myself how to play the last couple years, this is obviously going to give me the push I need to really buckle down and hit the woodshed hard. Right? Right?

Bass?  BASS?  No one plays bass.  And some on what a horrible color combo that Stratacaster is  Get some taste.

On a serious note good choice.  Fender rocks and you'll never outgrow that guitar.  I'm coming from the other end of the spectrum.  I'm a guitar player learning bass.  Actually I'm competent on an acoustic, have forgotten how to play electric and capable of playing about 3 songs on the bass.  But it's fun.

Have managed to not get another one so far, but I am looking at a couple. Someone at work was discarding this, saw it by the dumpster, then somehow, honestly it wasn't me, it appeared in my work area. I asked someone from site services if they moved it there, they didn't,  so I have no idea who who put it there. Long story short, I decided to bring it home.

Do you like music? I mean really really like it? Ever rewind a song because a certain phrase or riff really catches you? If the answer is yes and you like guitars get a guitar.

DO NOT make your first instrument it will likely not play well. You'll be more likely to quit than if you had a good instrument. Get a guitar and teach yourself. If you are interested enough you can teach yourself. Think of all the things you learned after high school that you didn't need a teacher or a classroom to learn.

Nice.  So far I can play Lady Madonna and Crossfire on bass.  And a little open jamming.  Not enough energy and time to get good at it as I am really trying to regain my chops on the acoustic.

yeah definitely possible to teach yourself. It may be stupid but the biggest piece of advice I would go back and give myself is to practice alternate picking at first, because the muscle memory of that rigid beginner down stroking thing will surface when trying to learn stuff with downward sweeping, to this day

Anyone have a mule resonator?  I played a used gretsch resonator last summer and was liking it enough to consider buying but anything involving either E string sounded odd.  Recently saw a video of Rhett Shull talking about a mule and it sounded incredible.  Not cheap though, even used.  Beautiful guitar too.

A Gretsch Electromatic has a "thin U" neck. I find it very comfortable and in fact more comfortable than a Strat. They are mostly single cuts if you want a solid body. Something like a G5220 model.

I like Jackson soloist necks. Thin, with a 12-16" compound radius. Not even a shredder, just feels nice.

What are the go-to apps for learning/practicing? I have rocksmith 2014 but haven't messed with it in awhile. Is the subscription version worth the money? What about ultimate guitar, or fender's app? I tried the free version of yousician a long time ago but didn't really care for it. I saw Mach mention the boss pocket gt, which seems very promising but the app reviews aren't great. Is that subscription based or do you just pay for the unit and sign up? I've also done some of the Your Guitar Academy videos on YouTube and didn't hate them, but I guess they have a pay version as well.

So what's worth spending money on?

The guitar pro desktop app is hard to beat. You can find gp tabs for lots of songs and then slow it down to 70%, or mute tracks to play along with just the drum beat, etc

Songsterr is also pretty good but less functionality than the desktop guitar pro app

I'm in the same boat as you but going the opposite direction.

guitar player learning bass. I'm a fan of the Fender Play app.

website, phone, computer, iPad accessible. It tracks your lessons and progress and they've added one on one lessons if you want (they charge extra) but so far that app/service has been great.

You also get a discount on Fenders website

I love my Guild Pilot bass. They're so light and have a great tone when not plugged in. Took me while to find amp settings I liked though. They're criminally underrated basses. I mean, Jaco Pastorious played one, and yet no one seems to have heard of the things. :)
it's actually one of the only guitars I've ever bought because I liked someone else's tone: Doug from Dag Nasty had one on the Wig Out tour, and I decided that was where I wanted to be sound wise so grabbed it like-new for $400 back in 1990 or so. It's got the smaller curvy headstock, not the triangle "metal" era or "cake knife" heads.

Guilds are such solid guitars. My main electric is a 1970 Bluesbird M75, LP kinda thing, but chunky mahogany that's so full sounding.

I just made a resolution to choose one of my six instruments and try to learn to actually play it decently.

I like Jackson soloist necks. Thin, with a 12-16" compound radius. Not even a shredder, just feels nice.

25.5in scale, 9.5in radius, C modern profile, medium jumbo frets, pau ferro fret board. I don't know if any of that is good or bad, I mainly bought it for the color.

Thanks.  I intend to get a new guitar soon and wanted a 'smaller' neck - all good info,.

A Gretsch Electromatic has a "thin U" neck. I find it very comfortable and in fact more comfortable than a Strat. They are mostly single cuts if you want a solid body. Something like a G5220 model.

Much obliged for the info!
