Most Icon and Craftsman tools nowadays are made in Taiwan.

I can't afford snapon or matco since those are uber elite daily mechanic grade.

I go with Taiwanese made since it's supporting good folks and literally..jes as gud

That's not what we're discussing. There's a new expanded set coming this year.

ETA: The title of the thread,

I wonder how this Craftsman mini set will compare to the upcoming Icon set?

No point in having anything smaller than 3/4" drive tools.  Those smaller things just don't hold up to teh real jobs.

Hart and Milwaukee are owned by the same corp.
https://www.harttools.com/products/flex-head-mini-ratchet-set
So, to compare, the Hart is a 1/4 drive ratchet not bit ratchet like the Icon. Therefore it does not have a pass through, t handle or even a bit driver at the bottom. Nonetheless it has a flex head and the price is better unless you use a HF coupon.

The new HF will also be a ratchet driver instead of bit driver but will have a bit socket at the end.

Edit, the Hart actually appears to be a non pass thru bit holder.  It has a built in bottle opener.

I wonder if the driver handle will have a socket in the back of the handle? That would be a neat addition.

The Hart is a Bit holder type, with a bit eject button, not a pass through. Its got a pretty smooth ratchet action. Made in South Korea. The handle end is not a bit driver, Icon beats it there. Next time HF has a good coupon I might have to pick up the Icon.

I have craftsman stuff from the 50s 60s 70s and 80s, when it was still USA made.

Bought a 3/8th set in the early 2000s, marked USA on handle but sockets marked Indonesia, have had good luck with them
bought a 1/4 set 5 years ago, have replaced handle 3 times, went and bought a cheap S-K to replace it

wouldnt buy any of the new craftsman stuff anymore

i buy cornwell or s-k stuff now

but open to trying the icon stuff

The better grade Harbor Freight stuff is just as good as the Chinese stuff Lowes, Craftsman, etc. sells. Why do people think Chinese tools are good when they have a old school brand name on them but not if they come from HF?

Everyone wants to love on the Made in America Craftsman stuff but every ratchet, even Snap-On from the 20th century is crap in comparison to what we have today. A $40 Taiwanese made ratchet will beat the pants off of a top of the line one from the 1980's. With other tools there is a lot of truth there to be fair, just not ratchets.

Not interested in the Craftsman tools with the here it is , now its only with a recipt , now its gone warrantee . In my area there is about one lowes or harbor freight for every three or four Home Depots.

I just go to Home Depot and buy a Husky set. In the rare case I need a replacement for something I beat on and broke I pick any HD store and without doing any foolish paperwork or messing about they hand me a exact replacement or if they don't have that they give me something better. Tools hold up fine , HD stores everywhere and they make the whole process easy and fast

I bought the Craftsman.  It has a similar case to the Icon. It is however larger and heavier.  The stronger feel normal ratchet is nice but less flexible than the Icon. It has 2 extensions plus a swivel. It has a seperate bit driver.

I think It is barely worth a 100 bucks but I think the upcoming 65 dollar Icon will in many ways be better. The Icon will have 2 sets of sockets.

The Icon already kicks the Craftsman’s ass with three details, the locking flex head, the pass through extension and the T-handle capabilities + 1/4” recess on driver’s handle end that also accepts the extension.

I use mine almost every day at work. The only issue that I have is that the head no longer holds the bits in place. I need to take it to HF to exchange it (lifetime warranty), but I keep forgetting to grab it on Friday when I bounce out of work.

My older USA Craftsman 10mm deep socket cracked in two places driving in a fastener with very little torque. Lowes replaced it with a Taiwanese socket.

Check to make sure the spring bit retainer is still in the head. If it is it may be stretched out a little and not engaging the detents in the driver bits.  It can also get rotated so it doesn’t engage the slot in the head.  I had to remove mine and bend it a little.

I find myself using more and more 1/4" drive unless I'm doing suspension work or pulling the heads off an engine.  For common fasteners with a 10mm head, 1/4" drive should be all you need and the small wrench fits into tight engine bays.

I already own the small Icon set and will probably buy the larger set as well.  I'm planning to build my retirement shop soon and need duplicates for the common tools that I want to have at home as well.

99% of the time I use 1/4 drive. I've actually worn thru the chrome on a SnapOn 3/8 and a 7/16 wrench.
