Played fetch 2 times with him last night (15 minutes of hard running each time).  He was barking to go outside this morning so I let him out at 6am (I guess he was feeling bad, we had gone out at 3am too), brought him in a little after 9am - put 2 other dogs out for 2hrs.  Apparently my wife put him back out this afternoon (I did not know about that) - we went for father's day supper.  Came home, daughter did not want to feed the chickens because Beau was outside, but when we tried to let him in, he did not come.  Found him dead beside the dog house.  No clue really why he died.  Heatstroke?  Poisoned Rat.  Choked on something he should not have eaten?  Any guess is as good as another.  I think he was about 7, in good shape, exercised hard daily...  No symptoms till I found him at 9pm stiff.

We have 4 other dogs that will probably get more love and attention now.  One is 2x as old and going downhill pretty quickly (every time I see him sleeping I check to see if he is still breathing) - already getting a lot of extra love and attention.  But Beau was MY dog, and my hunting buddy.

Sorry OP. Its really not fair how short their lives are. I had the best dog, he was a mix of lab and beagle. So small ass body and a  giant head. He died one night while I was at work. He had been sick but not bad. Nephew who lives with me found him under the roof runoff in the winter during a freezing rain event. He went and got the shower curtain down and covered him. He called me then chickened out and said he was just checking on me, which he had never done.

Found out the next morning. Glad they covered him so he wasn't covered in ice. Buried in his favorite blanket.

So sorry OP.  Ours is dying of heart failure.  Not sure if it's easier for them just to go or to watch them slowly die.

I think it like humans, its hard when they just die, its heartbreaking to watch them wither away.

My yellow lab had lymes. Ran a high fever and couldn't stand up to even go get water. Was very lucky to have had him checked two weeks before for heartworms. Vet said no heartworms but he had lymes. Most dogs never show symptons but some get it bad.     Bless your family. It is rough losing a buddy

Sorry for you loss.
We lost one of our chocolate labs unexpectedly a few years back.
We were out hiking and he just quit and laid down. I carried him back to the truck and went home
He didn’t want dinner, so we took him to the vet. Belly full of blood, ruptured hemangiosarcoma in his spleen. 10 years old.
RIP Mousse, my good buddy

Wife and I are old. 2 years ago we didn't mean to set out to do it, but we ended up rescuing an abandoned dog off the street. Now that dog is like our family, and I only hope it will outlive us. I cried my eyes out for a year when my last dog suddenly died at 10 yrs old. I have a clue what you're going thru.

Stuff happens OP, don't blame yourself.  Also this kind of thing happens more often with over-bred pure bread animals.  Breeders have f---ed the gene pool up on most of them.

I lost my Maine Coon cat to a rare gastrointestinal lymphoma.  Breeders...
