I’m not a fan of the AR so much, but this is one I really respect:

Not mine. A request had gone out for an AFG and I happened to have one I wasn’t using. So the guy sent me the pic and a challenge coin as a thank you. In my mind, it was the smallest way I could thank him for what he was doing, but he ended up thanking me. Humbling.

Never heard anything else from him, hopefully he made it back to his family safe and sound.

To me, after 3 plus decades around this platform, now goes to a Mk18mod1 (DD Barrel and rail, Colt all else), a 6933 with Geisselle rail, (both pistols with Aero lowers and SBA3) and a LaRue 6.5 Grendel.  That's what I like so see, hard to nail down just one.

I really like that. I believe the perfect AR is kept as simple and light as possible with nothing added that isn't necessary. Your example is about as close to that standard as it gets.

BTW, what kind of front sling attachment is that? That looks so simple and inexpensive, yet so functional.

...entirely dependent on the user and use case(s).

Mine gets carried a lot and needs to be useful from 0-400m with the ability to identify targets. I opted for a 16" 5.56 pencil barrel, MBT, M600V, and TR24. Does CQB and medium-range well, and is fairly light and quite nicely balanced. I carried it on a couple-mile hike 8000' up in the mountains yesterday, it felt light as an LPVO-equipped feather.

One of my buddies needs a truly long-range do-all rifle with less emphasis on CQB. The family ranch has a lot of 1000yd shots, and has had problems with predators killing cattle. His perfect rifle has a 1-8x or 1-10x.

Someone who needs an HD rifle and/or one to be used in CQB courses has different needs, too. That's the beauty of a modular rifle.

Because the caliber is rather weak sauce, the best configuration is light and short and handy in keeping with its ballistic limitations.  In that role, there isn't anything better.

Looks are subjective.  Truth is, a CWAR is a great general purpose rifle.  Relatively lightweight, rugged optic (Trijicon TA33) with great eye relief and decent magnification, free floated accurate barrel, strong yet light rail (G mk4), collapsible stock, Geissele SSA-E trigger.

Truth. I’m not a big fan of the 33 personally, but it’s what I’d select for a forcewide optic. It’s lightweight, small, simple to use, absolutely sturdy, and very flexible allowing for ease of use on close targets on out to the effective range of the rifle.

The whole point is that there is no one perfect AR for everyone . Tune it up as you wish for the job at hand.

I have a pretty good sized safe but the gun I grab just to go to the range and have some fun is a flat top with a pencil barrel 20" and a A2 stock.

Some times with just a carry handle and sometimes with a optic of some sort.

Make your own choice

what's the "perfect" golf club?

the perfect AR is the one that is handy when you need it....reliable when you need it....accurate when you need it....
and loaded with effective ammo when you need it...one you are totally familiar and comfortable with.

This guy gets it. However, if I had to pick 1, it'd be a CWAR style. Lightweight, simple, 14.5 or 16in barrel, TA33 or lighter LPVO, adjustable stock.

For being task dependent, however, this is my current go-to:

Upper:
Ranier spec Faxon 5R 10.5" barrel, BCM upper and Mod 4B CH, SLR Solo Lite 9" handgaurd, Geissele SGB, FCD 1815 FH, (KAG was switched for Unity VFG), Inforce WMLx, Aero NIB BCG, Proctor WOTG sling with a FCD Sling Keep A, Brownells 360 Rear and Midwest Industries HK Front.

Lower:
PWS Mk1 Mod 2-M stamped lower, Ascend Armory TI Mag Release, V Seven 57deg Hybrid Ambi Safety, takedown pins, and grip screw. POF bolt release, Geissele SSA-E from CWTX2, Hogue 15deg grip, MVB ARC-Xti.

With 31rds of Gold Dots onboard, it's a solid weight, shoots smooth, and hits plenty hard for property defense. Well balanced, compact enough to effectively and easily move through a building, and if I need to I can throw it in a backpack and take it anywhere I'd need to without looking like anything. It's just about perfect for my applications, still need to get an RDS on it though.

So why isn't this the "perfect configuration?" Because it's a 10.5" barrel. I'm knowingly trading a fair amount of ballistics to get a whole lot of handling, but if I could only have 1 gun this wouldn't be it because of the ballistics lost. Personally I think a 12.5" 6.5G is the perfect balance of ballistics and size, but then you run into some concerns over ammo, mags, and bolts, so I wouldn't call it "perfect."

Adorable. Now try and run any sort of course with it or try and go through a building with it. Longbois are nice for reaching out at distance, but don't really do anything else well. I can shoot a 10.5" at distance a whole lot better than I can clear my house with a 18-20"+ (yes, I've compared them), not to mention the extra weight starts getting tiring quick if you're keeping it in your hands and not your sling or a backpack. With the upgraded ballistics we have in different caliber options, IMO, the 18-20" AR is largely defunct in it's usage with some very niche exceptions since I can get the same or better ballistics from a much smaller package.

Is it a great hunting setup? Sure looks like it! Would I enjoy shooting it on the range? Hell yes! Would I want to do much of anything else with it? Nope. It may be perfect for it's roll, but it's far from optimal perfection.

Just Sayin.
