I've always liked Seiko watches, but I seem to have an undying affection for the SKX007 specifically. I mourn the discontinuation of its production every Wednesday at 1pm for 15 minutes. While there was certainly room to improve the movement, I wish they would have retained everything else.
I understand that I can still find the SKX007 on ebay, but I am wondering what else I should consider. I would prefer an automatic, but I'll consider a light-powered movement (like the Citizen BN0150-28E). For budget, I'll set it at $1,500. I may even be convinced to go up to $3,000, so don't necessarily limit recommendations to $1,500 and below. What would you recommend? |

Islander. Or consider the Seiko SK5. I gave my son one. Honestly it’s a pretty good watch - the only knock I can think of is lack of screw down crown. If you are a serious diver that might be an issue, for most folks it’s probably not. If you are a serious diver get the Seiko Turtle. Pics:

Tagging this, it kills me what the SKXs are going for - knew I should have bought a second SKX013

My skx007 is my favorite watch and the posters above me have hit all the best options, islander SKX007 clone, Seiko turtle, Seiko 5kx, or Citizen promaster.
The citizen promaster NY0040 has an extremely similar vibe to the SKX but also includes hacking and hand winding. Attached File Attached File |

Just get the skx007. It’s what you desire. Don’t settle for something else, especially something much more $$$ or less that still isn’t a true skx007.
I love my skx007 but I have retired it. It’s already quite worn and beaten up. |

Thank you, fellas. Very helpful.

The Seiko 5 line was my first love in watches, and while I like and have considered the one you posted, the glass back is a turn off for me, and so is the lack of screw down crown. Looks great on the wrist though. Thank you for the Turtle suggestion. I had considered it before, but ruled it out as too big and bulky. It looks very nice on your wrist though. I'll add it to my list again and see if I can find one to try on. Looks very nice! I'll give you $15 for it. $20 and you pay for shipping. |

That thing has been absolutely abused beyond anything a grown adult would do, including hours and hours underwater with questionable crown placement (he learned how to set the time himself so he could end napping early.... clever bastard). I have no qualms suggesting one. He's got a few marks on the front crystal as he's slammed it into more things than you can imagine, but it does just fine. |

With a budget of $3k you have dozens of great options that best the Seiko. List what is important to you and start researching which is half the fun.

View Quote @Forlorn-Hope yeah we told him like 2:30 nap time is over and he can come downstairs. 1:45 he shows up, and I say it's not time yet. He goes "It is on my watch" and showed me that he had it set. he helps me switch natos for him since he's too small to use any rubber straps. the size of the thing is almost comical but he loves it, I enjoy that he likes it, and he can read and understand time better than any of his classmates. Hell I know some teachers ask him to let them know when a time is up doing an activity |

I highly recommend the Orient Ray II. I'm wearing mine right now.
Attached File Mine was under $200 in 2021 when I bought it based on recommendations here. I have another Seiko 5 from college that was not a SKX007 but had the same 7S26 movement. It was nice for its time but this movement is so much better now. The second hand stops when the crown is in time setting position, and out of the box it keeps great time for an automatic movement. It's an Orient F6922, which is similar to the Epson YN56 and Seiko NH36. Overall, an incredible value for the price. ETA: Orient is now part of Seiko: Attached File |

Then the first model 6105. Made around 68-70. Then the second “Williard” model 6105, made around 70-77. Then the “turtle “ 6209/6309. Made around 76-88. Between 78-85 they made a slim cased 7548 quartz diver. Between 82-88 they also made a slim cased 6309 - 729x The 7002 slim case divers were made from ‘88 to 96. Towards the end of the 7002 line, they shifted unidirectional bezel and 200M , the old 150M , bidirectional divers would not meet the new ISO dive watch standards. From 96-2019 they made the slim case SKX divers. The 007 is probably the most common. The 173 looks a lot like the 729x, 7002 watches, That 7548 case, 729x case, 7002 case, and SKX case large not 100% identical, but very, very similar. |
