The leader of one of the nation's largest teachers unions was seen in a viral video saying that school choice "undermines democracy."
American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten made the remarks at the "Network for Public Education Action" national conference in October. A clip of her remarks blasting methods of school choice was shared on X and went viral on social media this week. In the video, Weingarten took aim at former White House Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Manhattan Institute's Christopher Rufo, and American Federation For Children Senior Fellow Corey DeAngelis for advocating for school choice measures. |

Personally, I think school choice can be a good thing. It gives parents more options and allows them to find the best fit for their kids.

Both the Secretary of Education and the President of the Teachers union should.be required to have a child currently enrolled at the lowest scoring school n their district.

They conflate their buzzwords; she means to say school choice undermines equity.
like all union leaders, whatever opinion she is spouting has nothing to do with anything other than ensuring continued dominance by the union.
why anyone would take this statement seriously is beyond me. "union boss says non union teacher schools bad" - oh, I am surprised |
They absolutely hate that we have the option to keep our kids out of their classrooms.
I bet the homeschooling trend over the last 5-10 years is driving them nuts.

If our customers have a choice, they'll go somewhere else!
100% pathetic. |

Hmm... I find the statement to be technically correct. I mean, "democracy" is proving to be a bad thing.
Every time a Commie uses the phrase "attack on democracy" or "threat to democracy", respond with they are an "attack on freedom/ liberty" or "threat to freedom/liberty".
Commies hate freedom. Its a truer statement than most of the contexts they attribute as attacks on democracy. |
Ever since J6 libs keep throwing the word democracy around when they don't like something. I'm tired of it. It's insulting to our intelligence. Democracy is a buzzword. Like freedom. Sorta like when Bush said 9/11 was because the terrorists hit us because they didn't like our freedom. It's getting old.

Any time a leftist says democracy you know they have the IQ of a tree and failed in school. Democratic republic.

Government employee unions undermine democracy.
That said, when taxes pay for schools, taxpayers deserve a say how their money is used, by electing a school board to determine how the schools are run. If parents want to choose the school, they can do so right now, by choosing to pay their own money. However, if they want other people to pay, that comes with strings attached. School vouchers for parents who don't like (government) public schools make as much sense as car vouchers for commuters who don't like (government) public transportation. |
What democracy is she talking about? We don't have one here.

We didn’t get vouchers in Texas due to democrats and rural republicans.

That depends on what the choices are.
Democracy depends on an educated populace. So if school choice is education vs more education, then she is wrong. If it is education vs ignorance, she has a point. |
