It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.

I don't hear them on 14.258. Maybe someone else can. EtA: Found it: HARC, The USS Hornet Amateur Radio Club NB6GC will be on the air July 24th and 25th celebrating the 52nd anniversary of the recovery of the Apollo 11 Astronauts by the USS Hornet on July 24, 1969. We will be providing a special QSL card to all stations that work us during this weekend. We will be specifically on the air on Saturday and Sunday from 0900 to 1700 PDST. Look for us on 80-10m CW, SSB and FT8 as well as DMR mainly on TG 91 and 93. Unfortunately no visitors will be allowed in the radio room for this event due to COVID restrictions. Club members must sign up for operating shifts in advance. You can get more information about our club and its events on our QRZ page. 73's from USS Hornet CVS-12 and NB6GC |

I'm laughing my ass off. Antarctica was spotted on 14.243, which seems to be the only frequency they use. Anyone who has spent any time recently on 20M is familiar with the splattering signal of EA3JE in Spain -- it's horrible. He's now settled on 14.243 and is picking off these guys calling Antarctica. I bet some are excited until he tells them his QTH.

I did hear an Azores station yesterday (can't recall the call) and tried to get through, but the pile-up was massive, so I moved on after a bit, then got the Swedish guy. I already have a QSL card from the Azores, so wasn't all that motivated... |

The only one of the three I don't have is TF3DT. I really wanted him because of his cool trucks and QSL card, but missed him. I guess he went QRT, as I listened to silence for about a minute then called out his call sign. His last QSO (guy from Spain) ended up returning my call. |

My logging software will upload to a lot of places like LOTW, QRZ, Clublog, etc. with a click of a button, so no real added work. |

I'm surprised most DX stations don't call CQ DX ANYWHERE EXCEPT THE USA!. Italians hold the distinction of giving us either the absolute BEST or the absolute WORST with damned little in between. They have no idea what going by the numbers means and fucks that up every time. I've heard a DX station work them and a minute later say "I did that to get rid of him. I didn't log him" (Fair enough) When they start walking on a DX split the ONLY way to get rid of him is pretend you're the DX station and give him a 5x9 and send him on his way. It's an interesting culture. I worked a Japanese woman on vacation in the Marshalls once on CW and we exchanged emails for a while. Interesting woman that hated working Americans on phone because she had a hell of a time with the accents here. I see her point. I heard a QSO between Maine and a Cajun once that was DX by everything but definition. Anyway we swapped notes on things and she asked me about how Japanese immigrants were treated. IIRC I replied "After a fairly short period of culture shock and mild confusion they fit right in and make excellent citizens." Actually they tend to bring a refreshing decency in along with them. |

Strangely enough, a GOOD Italian operator is one you don't even realize is an Italian until you notice his call sign as you write it down.
ETA One of my favorite QSOs was an Italian woman I had a ragchew with. She sounded like a real Contessa and I pictured someone like Sophia Loren. Of course she could have been a 400 pound woman in a muumuu. |

The honor of sexiest voice in ham radio goes to Estela Mary. She was operating a Spanish special event station (EG4RCH) when I worked her. I don't know her personal call sign.
https://youtu.be/8nj3tgGaGsw The video doesn't do her justice, since she isn't speaking English. |
