I just bought a 8mm M48.  How bad is the recoil?  Is it similar to a .308 or 30-06?  Thanks.  I just dont want to be unpleasantly suprised!

Obviously, it will depend on bullet weight, but expect it to be just about like a .30-06, as they are almost identical.
And I love my M-48.  It was basically NIB and it shoots great.  Have fun.

Commercial 8mm is pretty tame.  I would agree it was on par with 30-06.  Some of the milsurp 8mm gives a better kick, specially the Turk stuff being sold at this time.

Thanks guys, I just bought a new looking M48.  The wood is a little dinged, but the bluing looks pretty nice, only some wear.  The girlfriend is going to kill me though.  I got the cosmoline off by putting it some hot hot water in the bathtub.  Left a pretty nice ring!  I better go clean it before she gets home.

I love Mausers and it's so much fun cleaning them up. I only shoot surplus ammo (Turk) and it's comparable to a 30-06, not really unpleasant at all.

My three Yugo M48's are the three rifles standing up on the right-hand side of the picture.

Whats a good, cheap Mauser?

Turks are usually the cheapest. Sometimes they go on sale 5/$100. They're all pretty good rifles.

Thanks, and now I return this thread to its rightful owner.

ARDOC,
The M48 Mauser's sights are set up for 198 gr. bullets at (full tilt) German military velocity. If you use Turkish 148 gr. (also high military velocity) expect it to shoot about 12" high at 100 yards. Don't forget to clean it with an ammonia solution directly after firing it. All 8 x 57 mm military ammo is corrosive, inspite of what some dealers say. The steel buttplate on these rifles will get your attention fast if you're not holding it tight against your shoulder.

Mine stings me, but I am used to shooting .308 semi-autos. I heard the M-44 is worse.

You've heard the honest truth. If you ever want to get everyone's attention at the range, pack up your 16" AR with the muzzle brake and pull out an MN.

Hmmm, my Mauser M98 (World War I vintage with a 29" barrel) has always left nice red marks on my shoulder. It's like shooting a 12 gauge. My friend let me shoot his K98 and it felt the same even with the shorter barrel. 8mm kicks but its fun and cheap to shoot, IMO.

My 1908/34  8mm shoots just great, less felt recoil than the gas opp SVT-40(7.62x54r)!

I feed a hakim 8mm and the bolt 8mm so just bought a wooden sealed crate of 8mm ammo!  I think it was 1800 rounds for 100.00!

A recent trip to the range with my M48A and a case of 8mm Yugo surplus produced:

1.) Sore shoulder
2.) Numbness in my shooting hand and trigger finger
3.) Onset of a headache

This was after 90 rounds downrange.

But I had fun!

Think about those guys in the trenches and on the front lines. Havin to shoot that almost all day long. I've never shot 90 rounds at once so I've never gotten a numbness in my hand or a headache. But 20-30 rounds gives me a sore shoulder. But like you said, I had fun too. :)

CDNN has some Yugo M48As. I just picked this one up, all parts matching INCLUDING firing pin itself. Cost = $89.99.
