A guy I know wants to trade this lee enfield for a m&p shield I have plus 200 dollars from me.
I know nothing about lee enfield rifles, what are your thoughts?

If the Enfield bore is good, a straight up trade or no more than 50 bucks boot.  anything more is too much.  Besides, the Shield is easier to sell than the Enfield.

A $400ish LB in that condition is a steal. 250ish is way too low.

I'd do that trade in a heart beat.

A used Shield maybe $250.  A decent Enfield can easily hit $600.  They've gone up, way up.

Any ammo for the enfield included? Looking at near $1 a round starting price for PPU. That needs to be figured in.

Rifle, bayonet, a few stripper clips and 71 rounds of ammunition.

I'd fo. No doubt about it.

I like my Shield but I can replace it at any time at relatively low cost. Enfields aren't sold everywhere and the price of them is on the move. If you want one, grab one before they're $1000.

Yesterday!

I own two No4Mk1 rifles.   A Fazakerly was my first and it shoots quite good.  The Longbranch I bought as a bubba resto project as the metal was unmolested.  I needed the two forestock parts, a buttpad, and some small metal bits like swivels and such.  My $80 acquisition plus another $100 ish dollars in parts.

I was very happy as my pieced together mish mash parts gun is more accurate than the whole unmolested Fazakerly.   (Sierra pro hunter bullet reloads, not Indian or Pakistani surplus).   Ironically I never owned any .303 surplus ammo.  I am not real fond of the click bang over aged powder or weeping cordite.  British war era ammo frankly wasn’t that good.

Just make sure the bore is decent as decent replacement No4 barrels (other than Criterion when they are in stock) are essentially unavailable at affordable prices.

Based on pics the bore is shiny.
I'll know more tomorrow when I meet him.

The majority of the LBs I've seen all have had nice bores

Do it so it do it.

Enfields are going up in value. Shields are throw aways.

Lee Enfields were thoroughly marked all over the parts down to the stock and larger metal parts

Stock bands, trigger housing, accessories etc etc etc should have  overlapping "LB"  stamps

I'd look at the receiver for matching s/n, bolt, lower stock right behind the front sling swivel bandplate magazine

If I had to guess that's a NO4MK1* Easiest way to tell the difference is the No4MK1* has a cut at the front right side of the ejection port to release and remove the bolt assym.

Push the bolt handle until the swinging side of the bolt head lines up with the cutout. swing the front part of the bolt head straight up and keep it straight up. Can then pull the bolt completely straight out the back

Check the  barrel it would have a 2 groove

The butt plate is grayish color some type of alum alloy. Could be wrong though

Long Branch * EDIT * is Canadianstan. Savage is another North American maker of No4MK1 and No4MK1*

Well, I brought it home and talked him down to 150 plus the shield.
Bore is bright and shiny.
Bolt and receiver match, but magazine is non matching.

To be honest that's what I paid for that one as a back up to the shield I carry.
I'm in it for a little under 400 with bayonet some stripper clips and 70 rounds of commercial ammo.

You have done well.  You now own a piece of history.  Be warned, British Empire arms are an addicting rabbit hole to fall into, but one well worth the effort.

The only financially logical way to feed a 303 long term is reloading. Brass life isn’t great ( the sloppy chambers allow the case to really expand) but still can get typically 10-12 reloads out of a case before it gives up.
Once you learn how to run them, they are very fast and smooth.

Both Savage and long branch are considered the highest quality of the #4’s, being made without the pressure of the blitz and other wartime pressure felt in England but not North America
