Ran across 2 copperheads at the lake this year. Bashed ones head in with a log and the other scurried off before I could kill it. My 9mm is full size and not an option to carry between the path to the lake. My .380 would be perfect but I can't find any .380 snake shot.

You can't find it because there is none.

how about you just use that stick to flick them out of the way and not kill an animal for no reason

I was thinking the same thing a couple days ago when I killed a copperhead in my yard while mowing the grass.  Actually, my first thought was, "wow, I just found a use for the Taurus Judge."

And, when that snake bites a kid?  or someone's pet?  Poisonous snakes, like poisonous spiders get killed on sight unless I am deep in the woods and off of a trail.

Copperheads get executed on site. To many children traverse the path along with my dogs. Little bastards are hard to see as well.

CCI 357 pest control cartridges in a SP101 seems to stop them in their tracks.

Ford Super Duty's do the trick as well. I went home for vacation last month and one day when we were leaving the lake a big ol' snake was crawling across the road. My dad missed it on the first pass, but with me spotting him from the passenger window we got him on the back up. Rolled forward again to finish him off. My dad is of the mindset that "the only good snake is a dead one."

i honestly can't think of a more useless round than snake shot in the 380. it's pathetic at best out of real round.

as for copperheads. they are kill on sight.

They make it in .22. I'd think .380 would be a bit more potent. Besides it's all I have for a small carry gun at the lake.

Can you not load your own?

IIRC Speer offer empty .38/.357 dia shotsell capsules...ya just pour in the shot size ya want...

They'd need to be manually cycled in an auto I'd think - but may be better than nothing

Well, they are generally considered to be revolver cartridges for one...  The useless .22 version provides all sorts of fail for autoloaders...

.22lr shot shells may be useless, but I just killed a copperhead last weekend with one shot (point blank, from rifle).

They'll kill snakes, rats, all kinds of stuff as long as it is really close range.

I just shoot them in the head with a .38 wadcutter, but look on the bright side.  If you HAVE to use snake shot, this means you need to buy a new gun.

I don't mind snakes. But copperheadedrattlemoccasins scare the shit out of me. I'd rather shoot from a distance and blow their head to bits.

Nope. Too many other hobbies. I have a buddy that reloads. Worth checking to see what he can do.

I was at Cabelas in Mitchell, SD last weekend gearing up for a PD hunt. They have a lot of rattlers out there. Cabelas had a lot of pistol bird shot. Besides 22LR, the smallest they had was 9mm.

The smartest answer is almost always incongruent with arfcom GD.

There was an article about 20 years ago in Guns and Ammo where the author made his own snake loads without the capsule. Basically it was primer, powder, and two gas checks with some no.12 shot sandwiched in between. Of course they were using it on 44, 45, 357 etc. Don't know how tricky 380 would be. Not much room for powder, but again, would you even need more then about 2 grains anyway?
