I'm gonna expand my system in a few months. FUCK THE BIG UTILITIES. FUCK THE TAXES WE PAY ON ELECTRICITY ALSO. |
|
How many panels and what rating (each and total) do you have? Brand and model?
How big is your battery bank? |
|
|
Our local co-op service has been pretty shaky for the last 10 years or so.
What was the cost of these panels? And what was your "out of pocket" cost. |

If I average my last twelve months of electric bills, I pay $100/mo. Doesn't seem like enough to worry about making a change in infrastructure. Reliability is excellent too.

Oh btw, having the government force the utilities to buy solar power at the full retail rate is complete bullshit. The government has no business fixing prices *anywhere*. That is what the utilities are pissed about. And no wonder, they only get to sell that power at the same retail rate, but transmission losses and infrastructure costs are pure losses for them.

Plan to add at least 2 more panels and get a new/bigger inverter in a few months. |

I am in the process of building a new shop for my farm. Anyone recommend companies to design and sell solar components?

Arfcom has taught me that renewable energy is evil and we should all be using coal and oil. It's a fact.

China is making them cheaper and cheaper also. |

If batteries would follow a similar path downward in price, an off-grid solar system would be a no-brainer for me.

Jeez louise.
34 cents per rated watt http://sunelec.com/tianwei-90w.html Chinese panels, I think. |

I am hoping to get a leased solar setup here pretty soon. My parents just got theirs about 6 months ago and they are pretty happy. 150 a month which is about 10 more than I pay most of the time but I never run the AC. When I did for a little over a week when it got real hot my Bill was over 300. When I get solar Im breaking the Thermostat in the on position lol. |
|
I produced 53 Kilowatt hours of Solar electricity today.
Some cold, sunny days I run electric heaters, just to use up excess power, when the batteries are full.

easy to say that living alone in a trailer. Try buying a solar system that will run a whole house AC unit in a desert with a family of 4 or 5 and your looking at 20-30 large. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Can't justify solar $80 a month Well when SHTF or natural disasters strike don't you still want power to get on arfcom at least? Most grid connected inverters shut down when there is no power BTW. 100 percent off grid is the way to go. At 34 cents per rated watt, 10kW of power would cost you 3400 in solar panels. That's plenty to start and run the AC without drawing the batteries down. I cannot vouch for those chinese panels, however. And yeah, add in the cost of batts and inverters. I don't think it would be 20 or 30 thousand just for a system to run a whole house AC unit, tho. If you lived in a desert, the smarter choice might be some kind of evaporative cooler anyways. No compressor to run. All you've got to power is the water pump and the big house fan. |

FUCK THE GOVERNMENT THAT SUBSIDIZES SOLAR. They guarantee the loans mostly. That's the part of the subsidy you see (but aren't there tax credits as well?). The part you don't see is the money the government poured into various solar companies (mostly now defunct). And mandating that utilities purchases any grid tied solar at the retail energy rate is itself a subsidy. The utilities should be paying the same wholesale rate that they buy the rest of their energy at. |

If they ever get dirty and you want them cleaned, that's my job. Literally, solar panel cleaning is a thing.

If I cut back it would last a lot longer. Prices on electricity here would have to take a huge jump to make it payoff even in the very long term. |

Reminds me of the water shortage in California years ago. LA water company went on a conserve water campaign.
Problem is it worked so good that their revenues went down and had to raise water rates to raise more money. |

Between the cost of batteries, Inverters, pannels, controllers, and cables...are you really going to save any money in the end? What about winter time, when you get less sun. Have fun replacing your batteries when they die.
With that said, I think that solar energy is pretty cool and I would likely do it if I though it was cost effective to run my entire home, which it isn't. Free energy really isn't free. |
