It's a cycle that has repeated itself throughout history, regardless of what type of government Russia has, since they have no natural land borders to insulate themselves from foreign invasion-another cyclic reality of history with them. In their view, it's only a matter of time before another Tatar, Genghis Kahn, Turk, Corsican, or Austrian decides to invade them, so they take necessary preemptive measures and dominate the periphery, remove mass populations of ethnic neighbors, import Russians, rape, pillage, steal, go broke keeping the periphery security apparatus afloat, collapse back to Russia, build wealth, repeat.
We're at the "repeat" stage right now, only Putin is doing the smartest thing they've ever done by attempting to get the peripheral nations to bankroll their own security under Russian control, with a multinational monetary bloc. Meanwhile, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia have formed their own military alliance because they don't want to play, and they know NATO won't do squat for them. Sweden is saying they will back Estonia and Poland, and Finland isn't quite sure what to do, other than cut defenses because peace is a foregone conclusion... |

The group concluded that it was Georgia who fired the first shot and the opening attack was not justifiable under international law." "In the opinion of the mission, Georgia provoked the war when it attacked Tskhinvali early on August 8, using heavy artillery," Commission chief Heidi Tagliavini said during the presentation of the report, Interfax news agency reports "2.) On the night of 7 to 8 August 2008, a sustained Georgian artillery attack struck the town of Tskhinvali. Other movements of the Georgian armed forces targeting Tskhinvali and the surrounding areas were under way, and soon the fighting involved Russian, South Ossetian and Abkhaz military units and armed elements. It did not take long, however, before the Georgian advance into South Ossetia was stopped. In a counter-movement, Russian armed forces, covered by air strikes and by elements of its Black Sea fleet, penetrated deep into Georgia, cutting across the country’s main east-west road, reaching the port of Poti and stopping short of Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi." LOL like the EU would do anything to provoke Russia?. The report mentioned above is pure propaganda put out to placate the Russian Bear.
I hope Georgia has rearmed. The new president might assist in that effort. |

Several villages were ethnically cleansed by Georgian forces. On the other side, Georgians living in Ossetian controlled territory were "easy targets": Houses occupied by Georgians were singled out, looted and burned down.[4] |

Propaganda is best when it is accurate - but not telling the whole story. Pull your head out of your ass. What's said is your own country ceases to exist as in independent state. You have Stockholm syndrome to a frightening degree. You have a hard on for all Kremlin propaganda, when all you are to them is a buffer against the boogie man. |

I was reading a piece a while back about how Russia sabotaged efforts by the Ossetians and Georgians to come to an understanding and bring S. Ossetia completely back into the fold; afterwards, people such as Russian army officers ended up in high S. Ossetian political offices and no peace was possible after that. Russia has been manipulating this from the very start. |

Georgians are being seen by South Ossetians as mortal enemies because Georgians did a lot of war crimes against the S.Ossetians in 1991. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991–1992_South_Ossetia_War According to Human Rights Watch, during the war Georgian paramilitary groups committed acts of violence against Ossetian civilians within South Ossetia that were motivated by the desire to expel Ossetians and reclaim villages for Georgia, and by sheer revenge against the Ossetian people.[4] Between 60 and 100 villages were burned down, destroyed by Georgian forces or otherwise abandoned. Several villages were ethnically cleansed by Georgian forces. On the other side, Georgians living in Ossetian controlled territory were "easy targets": Houses occupied by Georgians were singled out, looted and burned down.[4] Yet, let me guess - Kosovo is an illegitimate country and should have been crushed? Propaganda is best when it is accurate - but not telling the whole story. Pull your head out of your ass. What's said is your own country ceases to exist as in independent state. You have Stockholm syndrome to a frightening degree. You have a hard on for all Kremlin propaganda, when all you are to them is a buffer against the boogie man. I like to refer to it (and some of the Eastern European satellites) as "Russia's speed bump". Belarus especially. |

I thought that Soviet Union and Stalinism was over? ??? What you talking about? Russian peace-keepers and civilian citizens were hit by Georgian fire. Russia did strike back. Then the venture of Georgian president failed. EU report conclusions on the 8.8.8 conflict: "Georgia is responsible for unleashing the Five-Day War in the Caucasus last August, says an investigative report carried out by the EU. The report was commissioned by the Council of the European Union. More than 30 European military, history and legal specialists – headed by Swiss diplomat Heidi Tagliavini – compiled the document. In a counter-movement, Russian armed forces, covered by air strikes and by elements of its Black Sea fleet, penetrated deep into Georgia, cutting across the country’s main east-west road, reaching the port of Poti and stopping short of Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi." Source: http://rt.com/files/politics/georgia-started-ossetian-war/iiffmcg-volume-i.pdf (original EU report) What I've read seems to indicate that Russia instigated the whole thing based on policies going back several years. And the whole "Russian civilians" thing is rather contrived. The Russians knew what they were doing when they gave every Georgian national who was an Ossetian who wanted one a passport. "Here, take these crates of munitions and attack the Georgians. Take these passports too!" <five seconds later> "The Georgians are shooting at Russian citizens? WAR!!!!!". But the first munition exploded was a Georgian one. It was the Ossetians with Russian backing who shot first. "Who shot first" is wholly irrelevant, and only comes up when Russia tries to shape the discussion. Russia was determined to provoke and provoke until fighting started. It was the pretense for the already planned and resourced invasion. Oh, I know about the Russian stuff. Nagorno-Karabackh and Transnistria as well. Heck, even Crimea and Odessa. By asserting a role as peacekeepers / conflict mediators / Black Sea policers they have managed to perpetuate a status quo that maintains political instability and keep NATO and EU expansion at bay. |

I wonder what would happen in the event Moldova were to reunite with Romania, which officially would make Transistria part of Romania, which is a NATO country. It would be almost a sort of paradox, i.e. Russian troops occupying part of a NATO country. I wonder if the Romanians could invoke Article 5 for such a thing. It's interesting to ponder, although the movement to reunite Moldova with Romania seems to have waned considerably, last I checked. |

Why are they wearing the USMC uniform? Georgian Army was in the process of switching from something similar to our old woodland uniforms and Russian stuff to MARPAT, the pattern being what they adopted as part of their modernization programme. I think by the time of the war only reservists were still using the older uniforms. |

Yes, but those guys were wearing DCUs at the time, at least according to the photos of them coming off the plane in Georgia during the war. Talk about shitty news to get while on deployment. |

LOL The Russians barely managed to defeat a force that was only a fraction the size of their own. They couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Russia should stick to producing vodka, prostitutes and suicidal authors. They're the only things they do well. Errr they did pretty good actually. The invading force was smaller than the defending force,They did it quickly with the 2nd stringers and proved the point they wanted to make. This shifted the power in the whole region to Russian favor and exposed waning US power abroad. Meanwhile after 10 years in the M.E., blood and money we are seeing the power shift to many of the same people we have been fighting. |

I wonder how many of those Georgian prisoners were murdered by the Russians.

I wonder how many of those Georgian prisoners were murdered by the Russians. I think most were repatriated eventually. I'm sure some were executed by the Russians or the various irregulars on the Russian side, though. |

I love how Russian soldiers always look like out of shape bandits in a post apocalyptic movie.
One thing I can say about U.S. soldiers is even with beards, they look like professional. |
