The Hard Rock Hotel - New Orleans, LA

Located at 1031 Canal Street in New Orleans, the new Hard Rock Hotel will be the most exciting new development in New Orleans! At the corner of the French Quarter and the Theater District, the project will create over 1,000 new jobs. The north end of Canal St. is undergoing a real estate renaissance with significant hotel and apartment development; a Hard Rock Hotel on the corner of the French Quarter is a landmark project for New Orleans.

The development will also include 62 one, two, and three-bedroom condos - The Residences at the Hard Rock Hotel New Orleans. Residences range from approximately 650 SF to over 2,300 SF. All residences will have balconies, while the penthouse residences have floor to ceiling windows with wraparound balconies. "What's most exciting to us about the residences, is that we can offer condo living unlike anything else in New Orleans. Residents will have access to basic hotel amenities plus exclusive amenities at the Hard Rock Hotel New Orleans, like private chefs and wait staff, valet services to help with luggage and groceries, a dedicated concierge, and VIP access to the hotel and all Hard Rock Hotels. The Residences will also have their own private elevators, rooftop pool, lounge, and gym." says Mohan Kailas, Owner.

Citadel’s team: Matt Peace, Chris Berry, Tim Thornton, Tommy Dupre, and Robert Schaubhut

My younger brother still lives there. He said they had some pretty bad weather last night with high winds and that started it. The workers building it also attribute the high winds as the catalyst.

Yeah... no.

This was either a design flaw, or an implementation flaw.

You can see darker shades of concrete showing under the lighter shades in the folded over concrete floors.

A lot of new photos at NOLA  at the following link.

Im surprised so many floors pancaked.

One floor impacting the one underneath it starts the domino effect. After the first one goes and the second one gives it's weight to the mass of colliding and impacting the next floor, then hurling towards impacting the next one underneath it. So it's picking up velocity with each new floor collapsing and it's weight becoming part of the falling mass.

Somebody cheating on QA/QC for the concrete. Flooding the mix with water to get more yards maybe?

I’d bet $ that the shoring was pulled on the upper deck before it hit strength.

According to Jonathan Fourcade of New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, an urban search-and-rescue team is preparing to sweep the building for three missing workers despite fear of an additional crane collapse.

This team is comprised of NOEMS paramedics, firefighters and other regional first responders trained to find people trapped in rubble

Building on green concrete before it cures 'to meet deadlines' is bad news. Technology and cheaper, lighter materials along with bad engineering cause this type of collapse. Sadly its all too common. The stuff we build nowadays cannot hold a candle to structures built decades or even a century ago. It sucks because the workers always lose, whether it is death or permanent disability those guys and gals on that project will never be the same.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a combo of factors.  None of which are good trade practices.  Add in some bribery and you have a cluster fuck of criminality.

The materials are fine, and as good if not better then what was available any time in the past. Cost cutting do to shitty contractors, and even shittier subs is the bigger issue. No-one gives a shit about the quality of their work.

You can see a guy just outside the building as it collapses. Doesn't look like he made it. You have to watch it on full screen.

Sometimes after a mess like that there isn't any "they" around to do anything at all. That can sink a builder fast.

My grandfather was the chief materials engineer on the interstate project in RI in the late 50s.  He was offered $4,000 a month to approve substandard loads, which was about 3X his salary.
