In my opinion by far the M240. The 249 is a good gun but I have seen it fail and it tends to need more TLC. Of course, both guns are intended for different roles - the 249 is really a SAW and an individual weapon and the 240 is a GPMG.

As has been said, SAW's wear out. Their recievers aren't built like tanks like a 240 or M2 where you can rearsenal it like 30 times. The problem is that commanders and armorers won't replace them when they need to be leading to troops having shitty worn out weapons. I had a brand new from FN SAW issued to me for my train up and my deployment. It just worked. Kept it well maintained and kept an eye on wear items and it worked with stupid regularity. Never had any issues with my SAW or 240, .50's were another matter all together though.

As for cleaning, this goes for really any belt fed but especially true for a 249 or 240, don't' waste your time with q tips on the feed tray cover. Leave it in one piece, take it off the reciever, then coat it (dunk it if you have enough) in SLIP 2000 carbon killer, then take it to the latrine and hose it off with hot water, relube and bam, inspection clean in like 5 minutes.

Loved the 240, ran like a top.

ETA: Odd sidenote, the 249 ran better with blanks than with live ammo, and the 240 ran better with live ammo, and turned into a single shot weapon with blanks. Yes, the BFA was on tight and the gasport adjusted every which way.

I also recently had the opportunity to qualify on the M60 platform on my last job. Sweet weapon, weighed less than a 240, and ran better than a 249.

The 240 requires an adaptor for the feed tray when using blanks.

Having fired the 249 and the Stoner side by side, the Stoner wins.
It's a much smoother cycling weapon, and easier to keep burst on target due to the long recoil system.

I hear that the Ultimax is even smoother.

They are essentially the same gun in different size. The M249's bolt design is a little different, as well as the fact that it has a magazine feed capability.

everyone that has said 240s are crap with blanks havent learned the secret yet. you have to use a round file to radius the leading edge of the feed tray where the bullet sits. you are basically creating a feed ramp to bevel the round down into the chamber since there is no bullet leading the way. Once you do this, the gun will run like a champ with live or blanks. The feed tray adapter keeps the round from sliding forward before the bolt can strip it off the link but if you have a stock non modified tray the tip of the blank will catch the lip of the tray before it gets pushed into the chamber. Kinda like using full wadcutters on a milspec 1911 feedramp.

They're modified versions of the UKM-2000, which though based loosely off the PKM is a different design. Also, they're made in Poland, so they're... Polish.

My personal experience with the GPMG (FN MAG) when using blanks, was that the gas regulator required a little fine tuning before it would work well with blanks.

Once during a defensive mission, my GPMG was a gigantic single shot weapon, one round per pull of trigger. After every shot I would adjust the gas regulator. Then it started to do 3 round bursts, a little more tuning 5 rounds and finally Full-Auto. And the weapon ran like a champ for the rest of the mission, used up just about all the 7.62 mm ammo we had in the vehicle. Became very proficient at clearing jams in the weapon after that incident.

I was issued the Ultimax 100, and it was really nice. Sure it is pretty unwieldy compared to the SAR21, but when it comes to full auto it is pretty smooth. The Ultimax didn't work well with blanks unless heavily lubricated.
