So I have a new car on order, coming in Dec....and I want a built in radar. The last one I had was a Passport 8500..like a hundred yrs ago. I see the Uniden R7 seems to be well liked, anyone have one? Does Escort or Valentine still make good units?
Are laser jammer a thing or just scams? Thx |
|
I’m a big fan of escort 360. Alerts from 2 miles out. The arrows are handy. I haven’t kept up on any latest developments.
|
|
I have the Uniden R8 and it is fantastic. I am sure the 7 is similarly fantastic.
|
|
Pretty sure you'd have better luck just running waze or Google maps all the time and watching for speed traps.

Check out Vortex's reviews and testing on YouTube
Know your local bands and where you are traveling. Id steer clear of Escort, Uniden is the hotness right now. I have an R3, solid for the money. Picked up the Redline EX when it dropped, bad move on my part...its a paperweight at the moment. Countermeasures are still a thing, pricey but still popular. ALP is the go to. |
|
Waze.
Unless things have changed the detectors give false alarms so often they are worthless. |
|
i have escort max 360, works fine. still got popped by GSP using laser when i rounded a corner on Father’s day. prick.
jammers do work, there’s a company in lawrenceville that makes not only the police radar gun, but also jammers. talk ab a conflict of interest. i know two people that have their hammer and said it does work, albeit not cheap. |
|
There is also the no cost option. Just drive right around the speed limit.

Valentine or R8. If you get the V1, download JBV1 if you have an Android.

Its nice to have an early warning, so Im not surprised by the hammerlane idiot who decides to hit the brakes when the bumper or roof of a chevy or ford appears in the median.

In before the full shit show starts.
I see some have started the ball rolling already. |

Valentine 1 V2 will running the JBV1 app on a phone or tablet and having it connected to Waze is the best solution hands down. You get the latest Valentine technology, the JBV1 lets you customize the control and displays a heat map of where all the recent real time threats are, and it can connect to Waze with audio alerts telling you when a cop is ahead. 100% hands free with audio alerts.
|
|
Around here the cops run their radar all the time, even just driving around.
I saw a couple of speed traps when I first moved here, but since getting an R7, zilch. |
|
Waze, eyes constantly scanning ahead side to side, good traffic conditions and not being an a-hole when driving like excessive speeding or aggressive driving. Staying out of VA helps me too

There are additional add-ons to silence any alert below certain speeds or to turn off certain bands. Certain automatic door openers will still set mine off. |

I keep mine at 9 over in NYC because the speed cameras don't get triggered. Also, some speedos in cars can be wrong, like +1 or -1 so I play it safe. |

Quoted: Waze. Unless things have changed the detectors give false alarms so often they are worthless. View Quote Things have changed. It doesn't have fancy arrows, but the Radenso DS-1 tested out with the best Ka Range, I think even in Auto City Mode. They are currently, right now, on sale for $370 on their website or Amazon. it does a pretty good job of eliminating, and reducing the various collision avoidance RADAR's on board new vehicles. I've always liked V1's, but even their Gen2 unit has a serious report delay if you have the K band tightened down to max, to help reduce avoidance radar's. I had hoped Radenso would have Theia out by now, but they don't, and even if they did, I'm guessing it would be in the $1100 range. if you've got the money, get an R7 or R8, but I don't think anyone would be disappointed in a DS-1. Navy Electronic Surveillance/Electronic Countermeasures experience. Still work in a related field.
Most any radar detector can find a police radar. The better ones have somewhat better range but the real benefit of the better/more expensive radar detectors is anti-falsing. If it falses alot, or even much at all, you are not going to have it on. Radar enabled cruise control and sensing systems which detect and alert you to vehicles close to you are both RF and make anti-falsing more difficult. Laser jamming of police LIDAR is a real thing and is legal. RF jamming of police RADAR is a real thing and is, for the most part, illegal. I know how to do it and how to do it legally (Thank you Navy.) but I have never taken the time to develop a unit. I use a Passport MAX360c, the Escort phone ap, and Waze. The Escort phone ap shares police alerts in realtime via the cloud. Handy link to radar detector tests Handy link to jamming info site I haven't evaluated LIDAR diffusing license plate covers. |

Been pleased with my refurb Uniden R7, I'd do that or an R8. Great range, directional arrows, customizable. Had a Uniden R3 before that which had great detection but I missed the arrows my V1 had. R7/R8 is best of both worlds.

Quoted: Waze. Unless things have changed the detectors give false alarms so often they are worthless. View Quote The cheap detectors are worse with false alarms. Spend a little more on a unit that uses gps and false alarms can be eliminated. That said, some LE turns radar off and will turn it on if they see someone driving faster than surrounding traffic. This is where WAZE comes in handy. Using both together works pretty well. |

V1 +Waze.
Any decent detector with arrows is worth its weight in gold. |
