I fly out of Charlotte quite regularly, and several times now I've noticed an odd-looking plane parked in what appears to be a small museum's (or large private collection) display area seperated from the runway by a chain link fence. If you look at Google Maps for Charlotte/Douglas, its at the North end of the 18L runway, the building to the East with all the different planes parked around it. Its parked next to a large white twin-engined plane & the building, just below the helicopters, with its nose pointed SE. The plane I'm interested in bears US military markings but I cant remember if its Air Force or Navy. It is a twin turboprop, engines mounted on the top surface of the wings, with three vertical stabilizers, and from the looks of it, accomodates two crew members side-by-side in the cockpit. The cockpit remindes me of an A-6 or S-3, no rearward visibility and not projecting above the fuselage like a fighter's canopy. Additional crew might sit inside the fuselage, but I couldnt spot additional windows. From the looks of it, I'd guess its a late-50s or 60s ASW aircraft, but I havent managed to find anything similar via Google. Kharn |
