My grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was a POW. to this day he has severe PTSD, usually manifesting as night terrors. He had a nervous breakdown in the early 60's, was diagnosed schizophrenic and endured months of electroshock "therapy" courtesy of the VA. When I was his caregiver, I had to watch him at night because in his mind he was still fighting. He would hurt himself if he wasn't woken up, and even then I usually wound up with bruises from his punching in his sleep.
A lot of that generation had to suffer both the pain of PTSD as well as a social stigma of being viewed as cowards or just insane. It is a shame how these people have to suffer, sometimes for their entire lives. Its an even bigger shame when some scumbags try and falsely claim PTSD purely for financial gain, as it detracts from those that genuinely need help. |
