Maybe because if their pilots and navigators need to carry a garmin handheld GPS, do you think they might not also have a functional electronic counter measures package on board ?

Oryx has been caught double-counting losses, or passing off Ukrainian losses as Russian ones -- an easy thing to do, since they use a lot of the same equipment.  And incidentally, why would Ukraine's numbers be inflated anyway?  I've been repeatedly assured that Ukrainian MoD claims of Russian and Ukrainian losses are 100%, take-to-the-bank reliable .

In any case part of the reason I don't get too concerned about individual losses or tanks or planes or ships is because this is a war, and stuff inevitably gets destroyed in a war.  I prefer to focus of the overall strategic picture, and that doesn't look very good  for either Ukraine or NATO right now .

Especially since the whole rationale for our support of this war was to weaken Russia by proxy without risking a single US life while fattening the wallets of US defense contractors.  That appears to have been an abject failure, at least as far as weakening Russia is concerned .

You do realize Oryx provides and counts only photo verified equipment correct? You can see a photo of each one claimed. Thats the whole point of him UNDER estimating from Ukraine claims.

Nice try puffer lol.

Ukraine claims to have shot down 35 SU-34s in two years; BrOSINT Oryx, who exaggerates only slightly less, says there have been only 25 downed .

Do you know how many F-4s -- the plane considered to be the best fighter in the world in the 1960s and 70s -- the US military lost in roughly 9 years of operation in Viet Nam?

678 total, 529 in combat .  An average of about 75 per year.

I'd say the SU-34 isn't doing too badly, all things considered.

We're talking two different conflicts here, might as well bring up WW2 numbers while you're at it.

The bottom line is the Su-34 just like most Russian gear is overhyped by the Russians and its Western fanboy lovers. It's not a great "modern" strike aircraft and it's certainly not manned by the best and brightest of Russia.
That "overhyped" SU-34, armed with Russia's guided FAB bombs, is pretty much the main reason Ukraine got its shit pushed in  at Adiivka.

If a weapons system works, then it doesn't matter how "modern" it is.  The .50 BMG is over 100 years old, and we still use it.

ETA:  Speaking of "overhyped" even the government is now admitting  the F-35 is an expensive turd, of which less than 30% is combat-ready at any one time.

Russia has 22 production SU57’s.  We have built over 1000 F35’s.  At 30% combat ready that’s ten times any 5th gen Russia has. We also have our fleet of F22’s which are superior to the SU57 even though it’s an older plane.

Even if the SU57 is so plentiful and unstoppable as you suggest (which it isn’t), why hasn’t Russia dominated the Ukraine airspace with it?  That’s what the SU57 is, an air superiority fighter.  The SU57 has been MIA.  Probably because its radar cross section would allow it to be picked off easily by US made air defenses in Ukraine.   It’s not that stealthy at all.

If you thought the F35 production was fraught with problems, the SU57 is vastly worse.  Russia can barely afford to build it.  If the F35 is a turd, the SU57 is diarrhea.

The Russians have not followed down the "stealth" path for their aircraft development, rather favoring EA as their main nonkinetic warfighting strategy.

Their jamming and deception is *spectacular*.  That's not to say that western tech isn't just as good, but the Russians leaned into it hard over the last 30 years.

So you could be able to observe it from the Moon, but if you can't track, target, engage, or attack it because your sensors are being spoofed (or outright remotely shut down), what does it matter from a tactical perspective? You'll get to clearly observe it with your "24" Garmin dome" while it eats your lunch.

The US can only afford to build that because of infinite deficit spending. If we were like Russia with balanced budgets  (who has the fastest growing economy) we couldn't afford 22 F35s. How that specifically works, I'll let the crowd fill in those open-source details lol.

IFF, and some of the "rumored" capability was some sort of digital aircraft "library" the Stinger won't fire on.  But you know how the military is, people just spout shit off.  It's "supposed" to not fire on US or civilian aircraft.

I was a C-130 FE...about 15 years ago, so a lot of that is long lost.

I have seen a Stinger laser designator with the brightness turned up and it essentially uses the same laser scanning like the 1980-90s super market scanner, same pattern anyway.

The old joke...

A fighter pilot and a cargo pilot are flying around, talking shit to each other on the radio. The fighter pilot goes on about how much cooler he is than the cargo pilot and says, "Watch this, brah!" hits the afterburner, does a barrel roll and then a loop...

"Top that!" he shouts to the cargo pilot.

"Ok, well watch this." says the cargo pilot.

The plane just goes straight for a while.

"How'd you like that?" asks the cargo pilot.

The fighter pilot is confused and asks, "What did you do?"

The cargo pilot replies, "I went to the galley and got myself some more coffee."

LOL, yes I know the joke.

Serious question as I have no idea.

How would our planes perform against peer anti air? Would our own anti air be a problem for our jets?

The Russians have proved to be completely incapable of complex air operations.

I’d hazard to guess that if you took their pilots and planning staff and dropped them into American equipment the result would be the same.

If you did the opposite, you’d have far more favorable results.

I'd say the SU-34 isn't doing too badly, all things considered.

The difference is Russia only has the ability to produce 6 (SIX) new SU-34 aircraft per year.  Losing double the amount of airframes you can build every year is a problem.

Losses have been accelerating due to the Russians heavily relying on glide bombs and needing to climb to high altitude to reach targets behind the lines.

LOL at the OP.

Ukraine claims to have shot down 35 SU-34s in two years; BrOSINT Oryx, who exaggerates only slightly less, says there have been only 25 downed .

How far back can they get to launch the glide bombs. If Ukraine has some PAC-2 magazines they've got a bit of range to them. The S-300 has similar ranges too. ~120-160km. I think the S-200's are about double that but not sure if they have any left.

Do you know how many F-4s they were building in the 1960s?

almost 700 per year.

Know how many Su-34s they make every year?

About 8 or so.

My mother’s people (ethnic Germans) left the Volga Valley in the 1870s because the Russians were duplicitous, dishonest, and quite disagreeable.

Family saying is that you cannot trust dishonest people to do good work because they are always looking for a way to do less and to cheat others.

And 150 years later, nothing has changed.

The SU-33 probably has a similar RCS but I do love the look at those two birds.

They are.

The soviet era legacy and many of the current Russian jets are beautiful.

I hope one day the war ends and we can have peace and I can fulfill my dream of going to the Kubinka tank museum and seeing a Mig29 and Su34 in person.

This thread needs more pictures of that gorgeous plane.

I got to go to Karshi-Kanibad in Uzbekistan back in the day and I got to nerd out on all the old russian shit they had there. Most of it was deadlined so it was like a bit ass open air museum but they still had a few flying fighters. The current google maps pics don't do it justice as they have moved/removed an assload of aircraft.

NAS Fallon has a Mig 29 and I think a flanker of some sort on display. I'll have to check my pictures.

Su-34 Soviet designed tactical bomber evolved from an even older Soviet fighter (Su-27) and meant to replace the Aardvarkski (Su-24) Soviet knockoff of the F-111.

Why should it perform well?

Gorgeous? The one in the 3rd pic looks like it either has a limp boner or it's in the process of flipping you off, with that ridiculous phallic symbol it has hanging between its engines.

I kind of figured Russia and China were building stealth looking fighters that didn't really have much stealth at all.

Serious question as I have no idea.

How would our planes perform against peer anti air? Would our own anti air be a problem for our jets?

This. Strangely, the US acts like they believe the Russian hype, and then designs counter-weapons for that capability, and any future improvements, and ends up with a completely badass system that kicks the absolute fuck out of the Russian junk. And then under-states its capabilities to keep everyone believing the US and Russia are on an even playing field.

That mentality started right after WWII.   Just look at the 'bomber gap' and then the 'missile gap' crises that were touted in the late 1940's and 1950's.

That mindset has never really disappeared.  It has just become more tempered, at least to some degree.

This.

Israel has consistently made Russian IAD look silly.

Turkey has hunted Russian IAD with Bayraktar drones

Azerbaijan has evaded Russian IAD with Turkish drones.

Ukraine has used our gear to destroy Russian upgraded S300s and S400s. Same with UK and French missiles. Ukraine is limited to 3rd and 4th Gen aircraft as launch platforms as well.

Ukraine has provided priceless information into the effectiveness of and capabilities of the Russian military.

They've also provided captured samples of Russian EW platforms that part probably getting tested out in a desert somewhere.

That comparison means jack shit. Look at sorties flown to get a better idea.

Maybe because if their pilots and navigators need to carry a garmin handheld GPS, do you think they might not also have a functional electronic counter measures package on board ?

Ironically, the Garmin is unusable above a certain speed. Commercial GPS is speed limited to prevent it from being used in missiles and the like.

Garmin has aviation receivers that can use GLONASS.
