[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Service 4wd?

Test driving a 03 chevy z71, four wheel drive works but after going back to two wheel drive the service four wheel drive light came on. Engaging and disengaging was kinda rough. Any ideas what it could be?

I have an 04 Tahoe Z71 and the 4WD sensor has shorted out 4 times when going back to 2WD from 4WD. They have fixed it without cost so far but next time I suspect I'm on my own.

Could be a couple of things. The switch on the dash has problems sometimes. The position sensor in the encoder motor on the t case has problems. This tells the system what gear the transfercase is in.

true the usual suspect is the switch though and the easiest to change

I have read several issues with that happening. If you look at clubavalanche (google search it) and there will be walkthroughs of things to check. Its an Avalanche forum but its all the same system.

Check the actuator motor on transfer case. Expensive, but easy fix if bad

pull the battery cable for a few minutes..Worked for me sved me from having to spend $100 on parts for acutator/shift motor.

You getting it from a dealer? I wouldnt buy anything that was having trouble already, thats just asking for a headache down the road. I also wouldnt worry about 4wd in a IFS equipped vehicle, but plenty of people do.

Its worse than the "i found a lockbox/safe/gun cabinet/freezer in my basement, whats inside" threads.

A sign from God telling you to pass on that truck?

Could be a lot of things, low fluid in the t-case, to the actuator others have spoke of.
