I don’t hunt but I like .30-06, .45/70 and .308. Not sure if those are considered FUDD cartridges but I like them.

Today I’ve learned that people don’t read past the thread title before responding (read second sentence of OP).
I’ve also learned that the definition of a Fudd cartridge is any cartridge that can be shot from any or pistol rifle. I’m changing my list: 6.5 PRC 300 PRC .375 Hammer |
12ga
Only deer I've shot with a rifle I used a .270 and it did the job. I have two .30-30s but their not legal for deer hunting in IA. |
Most common 3 that I actually use for Fudding purposes.
22LR .44 magnum 12 gauge |
.22LR
.30-06 Springfield 12 gauge 3” chamber It I could add three more, it would be 5.56x45mm 6.5 Creedmore .35 Whelen Now except for the 12 gauge and .22LR, I can reload using one kind of powder. Reloder15. |
30-30, .270, .25-06, .257 Roberts, 7mm STW, .243, 6.5CM and 6.5G is growing on me. Honorable mention to .22 hornet and k-hornet
.22LR, .22mag, and .17HMR are all fun too |
People don’t read. OP doesn’t read. Quality ammo box. Two calibers listed.
I like his list tho. |
243, 7mm Remington Magnum, and 270.
In reality it’s 243, 7 mag, and 30-06, but the aught six was a military service cartridge first so didn’t qualify. |

270 Win., 30-30 Win., and 22LR. I can take any legal game at any reasonable distance in the Northeast using those three cartridges.
30-30 - took my first deer with one....
243 - taken a bunch of deer with one - very sweet shooter.... 50 cal muzzleloader - they are just just to play with... Red |
Mine:
7mm-08- Rem M7 Go-to rifle for deer 280 AI- custom M70 choice for bigger deer, elk, caribou and longer range hunting 9.3 x 62- CZ 550 American for bears and moose |
Far and away, .243 Winchester. If I was going after bigger game, then .270 Winchester. I use a lot of .357 magnum on hogs from a rifle, but that's more pest control than actual hunting.

During the great ammo blight under Obama, I noticed that there was a supply of 30-30 at the Walmarts.
so I bought a lever action 30-30 now the ammo blight seems to affect soft point hunting rounds and there is a supply of FMJ military rounds. My top 3 non military based Fudd rounds Fudd round 1 30-30 Fudd round 2? 450 Bushmaster I can actually find this in stock I would go next to 300 aac Blackout, but that is a military round The Amish are running blackout for deer in their ARs Clip clop clip clop, thhhump thhhhump thhhhump Fudd round 3? I killed my first buck with 250-3000 its a 3000 fps, 87 grain round |
9mm, .223, 12G and bonus is .22. It is all I have, Fudd or no Fudd lol so what are we hunting?
243,257 weatherby,270, and 7X57. I know that's 4 but this is AMERICA after all!
.300 Savage. It was near the ballistics of a 30-06 but in a much smaller package, designed for a lever action rifle
It was the .308 before .308 was invented for the military. Then the 17 HMR, and the .22LR |
30-06 IS A MILITARY CARTRIDGE. HOLY FUCK.
For me, 30-30 is number one per OPs question. Nothing else, really. |
Only one for me..once I went to 300rum, the rest of the rifles went down the road..been killing shit with it since its release in 1999....
I built a .280 Ackley Improved (SAAMI version) a few years ago and love it. It's the full equivalent of a 7mm Remington Magnum factory load (and then some, with certain loads), with slightly less recoil.
I always thought a 6mm Remington AI, a 6.5x57AI, or a 7x57AI, would be neat cartridges (all based on the 7x57 case). I just hate having to form brass, which I did for my first .280AI brass but no longer have to do now. |
30-30
.22 LR 12 gauge Those would cover anything you'd hunt around here. |
I hunt short range brush. All Marlins.
.35 Remington-today’s pick. 30/30-my first love. .444 Marlin-if bears are in order. |
Does 6.5 Grendel count? 123gr SSTs are awesome on whitetail.
Otherwise I'm going to say .30-30 and .243 with the caveat that I live in MS where our deer don't get much bigger than large dogs. |
Everything I own or have ever owned was once .mil cartridge. Except for the .44 mag lever gun that I have never shot.
Well since I actually read the OP
12 gauge…..most versatile choice that can kill anything that has 4 legs or flys .270…..cuz it is legendary in the halls of all things hunting 30-30……cuz it’s probably the most prolific lever gun cartridge ever chambered But those aren’t my personal go-to for hunting cuz I use .30-06 |
I dig the .22-250 as a groundhog round.
Hmmm what do i have at home... 30-06 is mil 7.62x39, 45, 51, and 54r are all mil 5.56 is mil 8 mauser is mil 6.5 swiss i think is mil .22LR is sorta mil 6.8 Spc isnt, but I havent hunted with it. 7 and 8 rem mag arent, but I also havent hunted with them. 6.5CM gets a lot of love here. My grandfather used to slay rabbits with a 16 gauge sxs shotgun decades ago. So lets go with .22-250, 6.5 CM, and 16 gauge. |
Reading is fundamental, he said no military cartridges which leaves out 30/06, 308, 303, 45/70, etc.
My choices: 30/30 25/06 300 Win Mag |
This thread once again proves that gd only reads titles and maybe the first sentence of an op.
270 win 30-30 22lr? That’s it. Everything else I own is some country’s current or former cartridge. |
