12ga slug, 7mm mag, 45-70?

Just kidding.. anyways, what is the latest greatest method for ridding them?  I do have a 22 air rifle, but the one rat I saw was either hidden or hauling... How is stalking them.  Poison is out unless pet friendly.

Also trying to get my JRT mix on the trail but he has ADHD, LOL.

How much are those?

I only have 22wmr shot and a single six.  Not opposed to buying 22lr shotshells.  How loud are they?  I do have the perfect delivery device for those too I think..

Toss a loaf of bread in the yard, they'll come out to chow down. When they do, Hathcock their ass.

The one in my shed had to be less that $20 probably a lot less

That picture is from amazon

ETA:  .22LR shot shells?  not cheap iirc, but I haven't bought any this century.  In stock at a local place, but 20 is a life time supply.  shot them out of a .22 revolver for snakes back in the home country

My mom used to live in a house in NYC with train tracks running behind it. She said her dad used to shoot the rats that lived along it from an upstairs window with a .22.

Of course, that was many years ago.

Mine's a springer from the late '80s. Funny thing, back then my brother & I were importing machinery from Germany. I was air rifle shopping in the Beeman catalog and really liked the Feiwerkbau. I asked the owner of the factory we delt with if he ever heard of FWB. Turns out he went to engineering school with one of the founder's ( I think Westinger) son! Back then the exchange rate was around 3.6 marks to the dollar so I got the rifle & Zeiss scope for @ $350.00 US!

ETA: It's a 300 S with a thumbhole stock.

I got a running headshot on one that was on the top rail of my fence. 70s vintage Crossman single shot .22 pellet rifle with irons, about 10 yards off.

Still utterly shocked that I nailed the little shit.

After what they have done to my cars, I enjoy smoking each and every last one of them.

Probably taken out 20-30 of them over the last year or two. We do pellet gun rat safaris in our orchard and at the neighbors chicken coop at dusk.

That is my main issue.. I have two very curious dogs..   Heck one got tagged by a bark scorpion a week ago... PUFF, lol, out comes the benedryl.

I dont have much in the way of harbor for the rats, but they are coming into my back yard to drink from my drip system and I also think they are digging up bugs and stuff as i see small dig holes around.  They are hiding in one of my 3' across lantanas as it is the only real form of concealment... reducing that to a small shrub today.. but still no trash piles or food outside other than natural sources.

Me and the family were over at a friend's house a few years back when this huge fucking rat froze on the fence runners that faced the inside of the yard. We called for his 9 year old to get his play bow and another round of beers. He nailed that rat right to the fence with that little fiberglass jobby and a target tip. An amazing shot considering the amount of beer we had consumed.

Rat shot is fairly loud , more so from a pistol. Country to the name it isn't much of a sure thing unless you can get within 8 or 10 feet.

CB caps or CB longs are pretty close in both power and noise to a pellet gun . Trouble is if someone rats you out to the cops "just a air rifle" is one thing but the average cop doesn't understand that CB's are about as safe as you can go.

Big snap traps. Bait them, but don't set them for the first week and a half. They have a fear and wariness of new things.

Get them to the bait, get them used to it and then trap them.

The Tom's rat trap that someone already posted work great.  I actually had to really search for a couple of them because the giant field rats I got would run off before their body registered they were dead.  You could always drill a little hole in a corner and stake them with fishing line.

Bait + air rifle

Do water traps work on rats?  5 gallon bucket 1/3 filled with water, food to draw them in, grease the sides.  Dog safe.

This 30 buck fence charger is not pulsating ( like most ).

It locks rats, snakes, small critters ( small possums ) on contact.

I use one around my chicken coop, and have found steam coming off of dead rats the size of your fist.

Especially effective on snakes ( all sizes ).

Just an idea - if you want to setup a low insulated fence. Put the hotwire on top of a landscape timber ( or 4x4 or 2x4 ) perimeter, one inch high - gets all.

@MattelFromHell

Once he sees it the switch will flip, but our back yard has been pretty neutral for a long time, so he is not even in go mode, him and our other dog just chase each other around.

He is JRT with some hunting dog and chihuahua lol.

His kill shake is nothing short of biblical, he knows Jeet Kun Do, and some of his moves and abilities seem to not be based on physics as we know it.  Sometimes he does something here, or at the dog park, or wherever and my wife and I are just in awe of it.
