Another animated non-anime recommendation for a very good show: Harley Quinn.
TV-MA, great writing, hilarious, and has 3 seasons out with a 4th on the way. Seriously, just watch the first episode and you’ll be hooked. Attached File Here are the first 12 mins or so of E1: Failed To Load Title Failed To Load Title Failed To Load Title |

I’ve watched first two seasons of Harley, went in with not much of an explanation, and was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

I only began watching anime in earnest maybe four or five years ago, as one facet out of many attempts to improve my beginner-level Japanese language comprehension.
In that respect it has helped me immensely, but at the same time I have somewhat unexpectedly developed an interest in watching anime for its own sake. So, as someone who’s come late to the party, there’s a metric shit-ton of legendary series that I’ve missed out on. From time to time I’ve attempted to catch up with what I’ve missed, which explains my recent awakening to Hunter x Hunter. I’m also now about a half dozen episodes into another series that I’ve seen mentioned here, namely FMAB, and although I find parts of it to be annoying as hell, for the most part I’m liking what I’m seeing. That is all… |

Does Gurren Lagann get significantly better after E2 or is this more or less it? I was tempted to quit after E1, but I watched another episode hoping it got better. It didn’t.
The animation/art style looks bad, IMO, and a show has to really catch my interest to get me to overlook my dislike for mech-centered anime (Code Geass for example). This one was a struggle just to make it through the first two episodes. I’m hoping it’s another HxH situation where the anime turns into something completely different from what it was in the beginning, but that doesn’t seem very likely with this one. Especially with so few episodes. |

If you take the serious tones of struggling to survive from Evangelion, combine it with hyper testosterone filled, over powered fighting and quest for power from the DragonBall Z franchise, you get Gurren Lagann. Better action, fights that don't take 12 episodes of talking between punches, and from time to time, hitting some serious notes. Plus getting a bit philosophical further in and touching on the nature of human existence, and how our nature affects the existence of everything around us. Good stuff. Also, who the hell do you think I am? |

I tried watching E3, but couldn’t even finish it. No offense to anyone who found it to be a life-altering anime that shaped who they are as a person (or whatever), but it’s just not for me. There was the aforementioned shitty animation/art style and mech, but there was also the unfunny goofiness of it. I’m fine with goofy anime as long as it’s funny goofiness. I didn’t see anything in those first 2 1/2 episodes that made me even slightly chuckle. I just have way too many titles on my watch list to stick with an anime I have to force myself to watch while frequently checking to see how much time is left before the episode mercifully ends. |
