I had a Smith 6" 686, but decided to trade it in for something else, and had several options, and ended up going with this one: Smith 4" 586, pre-Hillary.

I found a nice S&W Model 57 that I got for a deal as the auction marked it as a 67. I added the period correct smooth targets (presentation grips) with the old varnish removed and treated with tung oil.

I think I may have an addiction. Of the S&W revolvers, all but the 4" 686, the 2" Model 10-5, and the satin nickel Model 38 have been bought since February 2023.

Picked up a couple Colt SAA’s this week. First is a 5.5” SAA in 32-20 made in 2006. Bought it mainly because I have the 4.75” and 7.5” 32-20’s, wanted to complete the 3 gun set.
 3 gun set.  The other is a bit of an oddball. It’s a “Wyatt Earp” version from Colt’s Lawman Series, I think from the early 80’s. I’ve looked at them for years and normally they are in new condition in the display case, etc. This one has been fired quite a bit, scratches here and there but nothing bad. I wanted a shooter grade and this was the first time finding one. I think the ladder “long range” rear sight and 12” barrel makes for a unique shooter. It’s in .45 Colt.

I primarily shoot handloads in .38 Special at the range. I have shot enough of the 135 Gold Dot to determine it is reliable and hits point of aim. There is basically no ammunition with enough oomph to use for self-defense that I would call pleasant in an Airweight. Less bad, sure, but not pleasant. There are some wadcutter loads going 500 fps out of snubs that are probably pleasant, but that is too weak for reliable penetration. The wadcutters in the 700-800 fps range are slightly less spicy than the 135 Gold Dot. But to me, the difference isn't enough to buy a bunch of the stuff, test it, and start carrying it. That would be 3 442s and the pictured 37-2 I would have to change over. In my current situation the juice isn't worth the squeeze. It isn't like the 135 grain GD is a known poor performer on the street. Even if I changed over to carrying wadcutters, all my spare ammo would be the 135 grain GD because it goes into the chambers much more easily. I know that having to reload a J-Frame revolver "for real" in a fight is a near zero chance. However, if I happen to be that extreme outlier I want my reload to go as smoothly as possible. I carry the Buffalo Bore "standard pressure" 158 grain LSWCHP in my .38 LCRs. Despite the "standard pressure" claim it is way more unpleasant in the Airweights than the 135 grain GD. In the LCRS though it works for me. Recoil is pretty abrupt, but not painful (it is painful in an Airweight). We tested it at the Snubbie Roundup in SC the first weekend of this month. It penetrated 4 layers of denim, expanded mildly (probably in the .45 cal range, I didn't measure it), penetrated 16 inches of gel, and was caught by the denim on the other side of the block. That would seem to be pretty effective. Would wadcutters be an overall better choice? Maybe, but I am quite happy with the results and will continue to use the Buffalo Bore. FWIW, when I carry my 332-1 .32 H&R Magnum I carry wadcutters. I didn't already have a supply of defensive ammunition for .32 H&R. So, I looked into it and decided wadcutters were the way to go there. I wouldn't be unhappy with them in .38 Special, I just don't have a compelling reason to change from what I have now. |
