I’m taking my son on a cross country trip this summer and plan on bringing my 365XL. I know I have to only bring 10rd mags and the pistol has to be in a locked container.

Are there any ammo restrictions? I thought I remembered a ban on hollowpoints in CA, but I might be making that up. I haven’t seen anything about it in any of the other trip threads.

You are fine with the HP ammo. The only ammo restrictions to be watching for
is no lead in hunting ammo and no armor piercing handgun ammo.

Also no tracers or incendiary ammo.

I am fairly certain it was/is New Jersey that has the "no hollowpoints" ammo restriction.

Thanks for the info. I probably did get CA moxed up with NJ on the hollowpoint thing.

Also no tracers or incendiary ammo.

Also no high-explosive rounds.  But bird-scare shot shells are OK.

Oddly enough, police aren't allowed to pack HP handgun ammo while on duty, but CCWers are.

In NJ police officers can carry HP ammo on duty but not off duty.  Only out of state LEOs and retirees can carry HPs in NJ off duty due to federal LEOSA.  There was a lawsuit for instate LEOs but I'm not sure how that went.  Sorry for the thread drift.

What are the ammo restrictions in California?

I believe armor piercing rifle ammo is not allowed.  You can legally own it but cannot legally shoot it.

The same applies to incendiary ammo and of course, armor-piercing incendiary (API) ammo is similarly restricted.

Then, there is the "words to wise":  don't shoot steel jacketed bullets on steel or at rocks.  The steel jacketed bullets can cause sparks and fires.  Many ranges have this as a rule.   Check the ammo with a magnet - if it sticks, it has a steel jacket.

We do NOT need any more wild fires, especially ones caused by shooting.
