Im thinking about buying my first nice watch and have narrowed it down to this watch

Hamilton 42mm

There is a version of this watch in 46mm as well, which is far more expensive. I dont want to be flashy, partly because I am not a flashy guy and partly because I work in an office with a lot of older guys who are very traditional. I have bridged the gap in my wardrobe (between being trendy and young and old and traditional) and I want to do the same with the watch. Would the 46mm just be too big, or is the 42mm going to look girly? also, on any given day I wear nice dress pants, dress shirt, no tie (usually) and I dont want to be overly formal.

I am an average height weight person and my hands arent particularly large. If anyone has pictures of a 42mm or 46mm watch on their wrists I would appreciate it!

Also, opinions are welcome as I am torn between the black face version and the silver face.

In my option, I would go with the 42mm.  The 46mm is just a bit large, for your average sized person.
The large face watches are more of a fashion thing.
I am personally not a fan of larger. I prefer, nothing larger than 42mm myself, and generally look for a 39mm case.
I 5ft 7in 166lbs_ish 47mm_ish wrist wide, and its 6_1/2 inches around_ish...
To me, when watches get to large, it gets hard to get dress shirt, over them.

Here are the photos you asked for. one watch is a 42mm case, the other is 46mm case.

The black leather band in the smaller one.

42mm wide, and it is 10mm thick (this is a much better looking watch in person

46mm wide, and it is 12mm thick

Both of them

42 is not too girly.  What is your wrist size?  Big watches have been regarded as a fad however that fad doesn't seem to be dying anytime soon.  I have a 6.5" wrist which is small and 42 is  is the largest that I can get away with and I wear a 40.  Dependent upon your wrist size 46 is very large in most cases and will definitely not be discrete.  The difference in price is mechanical (46). And the other is quartz which runs off a battery.  I wear a mechanical daily however I take it off when I'm very active as it is quite expensive and the movement is more prone to fluctuations from shock.  Mine was running 5 seconds fast in a 24 hour period and I shot 150 clays and now it's almost perfect.  Sounds great but that's the last time I shoot clays with it due to the changes.   42 is more conservative/tradition if that is what you are looking for however the mechanical is a work of art and a small machine on your wrist.  Mechanical for most cases and G shock for extremes for me.

That is very good to know. Although I wear a luminox beater that I have had for three years for anything physical I dont think that a mechanical watch would fit my lifestyle. I am not really interested in wearing a work of art as much as just a nice looking watch that isnt a Fossil or Invicta (considering that some people around here wear Breitling's).

Thanks for the replies. I think I will be very happy with a 42mm.

A few years ago I was pondering the Hamilton Khaki Pilot 46mm. I never bought it, but I'll tell you right now that 46mm is big. I've got 7" wrists and a 42mm is about the biggest I'd go with a dress shirt.

If I were wearing something beyond 42, it would either have to be a really special watch or something I'd be using with short sleeves and/or ultra casual (e.g. my G-Shocks at the range).

The following photos are watches on my 7" wrist (note: the IWC is not mine; was shot in the IWC Boutique).

Wrist shot of an Omega Aqua Terra 41.5mm:

Wrist shot of an Rolex GMT-Master II 116710 BLNR 40mm:

Wrist shot of an IWC Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" / "Little Prince" 46mm:

I have girly wrist (about 6 3/4), and here is a 42.

and this is a 45.5.  This one wears really big.

I seem to like the 40 to 42 range, but I have a couple over 44.  A lot of it depends on how thick the case is.

These are all great replies and have been extremely helpful. I will definitely be sticking with the 42mm. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and 185 lbs so I am very average in size and I think 42mm will be plenty flashy for me.

So the only remaining question is. . .silver face or black face.

I know I want a brown leather band, but its a hard decision.

For the Hamilton pilot, I'd opt for the black dial. I think it looks better for that watch.

Black Dial.

My next watch is a Hamilton Khaki Field Officers. Can't wait to get it on my wrist.

I appreciate the advice in this thread. I will be getting it in the next few days and will post pics.

I went with the silver dial to try, but if I dont like it I will return it for the black dial.
