I’m a week into the Zodiac.

It’s a great looking watch.

But, it’s 96 seconds off.

13 seconds a day off.

Slow, not fast.

I think this was like a 1500 watch new.

It’s around five years old.

It had a broken bracelet replaced under warranty.
And was sent in for stopping, etc. Under warranty.

The STP movements seem to have had a pretty bad failure rate with Zodiac, with some insiders saying up to 20% on the 1-11s and more on the 3-13s.
They seem to have been dogs.
ETA 2824 transplants seem to have been common as a fix by owners.

Fairly recently I have seen like a dozen of these watches on eBay NOS from the same seller for like 1000 bucks.
I’ll reset and do another week, and then try to regulate.

New to me birth year 1500 OP Date. Love this watch so far! After wearing it most of the day yesterday and this morning, I’m beginning to wonder why we went away from smaller watches. At 34mm it seems to fit perfectly.

My theory about the rise of larger watches is twofold

1) Nutrition has made people grow bigger/fatter, so watches grew in proportion.

2) As you get older, your eyes don’t work as well. I’m starting to squint at my Rolex, and appreciate my Panerai more. Attachment Attached File

Looks great and is a classic look. Timeless.

I bet that the size of the hands/dial is closer to many of the larger watches that you own.  That’s mainly in part to a thinner bezel on that datejust.   Measure it up to the larger sport watches w/ rotating bezels in your current collection.  I like minute hands that reach out to the edge of the minute markers.  Bezels inboard of the rehaut are a waste of space.

This is just my opinion. . .

Here are some examples of watches that wear way larger than they should.  This particular one is a bitch to read in low light situations too:

These hands are way too small for that dial and belong on something approx. 34mm:

These hands are just absurdly small for the case and would be more appropriate on a ‘ladies’ sized watch.  Even women don’t like the size of a ‘ladies’ datejust which are tough to resell these days. Remember that formula for the area of a circle?  3.14 r ^2   If you interpolate the measurements, the large surface area of the fixed inner bezel combined with the rotating outer bezel throw the dial way out of balance IMHO.

I’m a big fan of IWC but they missed the boat on this one and should’ve used a larger ebauche . . . Note the placement of the day/date and the three sub-registers.  They are placed a tad too far inboard for the sake of making a watch with a larger case diameter.  It looks too crowded towards the center of the dial and the hands are too thick for a chronograph:

This example uses the hands, dial space effectively IMHO.  The proportions would be closer to your DJ than the first 3 examples:

You need to up your game with some higher capacity and more accurate time keeping instead of slumming with that pair.
