Seeing the awesome thread on WWII MWD's made me think of our furry friends in Vietnam...

Sgt. Spano and his War Dog Lobo completing a parachute jump in Da Nang, Vietnam, August 1968

They were deemed "expendable equipment" and either euthanized or left with allied forces.

Breaks my heart.  I can't imagine the bond those dogs had with their handlers.

One of the only things Bill Clinton did while in office that I 100% agree with was signing the Bill that allowed Military Dogs to be adopted after their service was complete.

I worked for A company 1/46 Infantry 198th Light Infantry Brigade. We worked in the mountains West of LZ Baldy. We used scout dogs every time we could get them.

In November 1968 we had a scout dog team walking point when they flushed 15 NVA and VC. The dog handler was carrying an XM177E1 and fired it at he NVA. It jammed after 3 rounds, it pulled the rim off the case.

The NVA ran into a mature field of sugar cane. We surrounded the cane field then set it on fire and waited for them to come out.

Those E1s had a knack for jamming in the heat of it; E2s were the bee's knees.

We were patroling way out west in the mountains. We came upon a village and began to search it. No one seemed hostile so things were taking place at a leisurely pace.

The scout dog and handler and about 5 others were standing around overseeing the proceedings. There were several children standing not far away from the dog handler.

Suddenly the dog bit a hunk of flesh out of a 10 year boys leg in the blink of an eye and was back at heel before anyone could move. The kid was screaming and bleeding like crazy.
